Life‐stage variation in Sable Shearwater (Ardenna carneipes) physiology assessed using proteomics

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Life‐stage transitions in seabirds involve substantial shifts in physiological demands, yet the molecular mechanisms underpinning these changes remain poorly resolved. Here we applied untargeted data‐independent acquisition mass spectrometry (DIA‐MS) to characterize and compare the plasma proteomes of fledgling and adult Sable Shearwaters Ardenna ...

Nerve‐mediated excitation and inhibition of the smooth muscle cells of the avian gizzard

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 1969
1. The electrical events evoked in smooth muscle cells of the chick and pigeon gizzards by vagal, perivascular sympathetic and transmural stimulation were recorded with intracellular micro‐electrodes.2. Single stimulating pulses applied to the extrinsic nerves, or to intrinsic fibres, produced excitatory junction potentials (E.J.P.s) which were blocked

Beyond mammals: the evolution of chewing and other forms of oropharyngeal food processing in vertebrates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1406-1462, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Oropharyngeal food processing exhibits a remarkable diversity among vertebrates, reflecting the evolution of specialised ‘processing centres’ associated with the mandibular, hyoid, and branchial arches. Although studies have detailed various food‐processing strategies and mechanisms across vertebrates, a coherent and comprehensive terminology ...

Characterization of Harderian Gland‐Derived Plasma Cells in Chicken

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Immunology, Volume 56, Issue 6, June 2026.
An isolation protocol for plasma cells (PC) from the chicken Harderian gland (HG) was established, and analyses of PCs revealed a FSChigh/CD45med/sIgpos/CD57pos/CXCR4high/TACIlow phenotype. Presence of CXCL12 and BAFF around HG PCs suggests a contribution of CXCL12–CXCR4 and BAFF–TACI to PC localization and survival.

Clinical approach to small psittacines and passerines

open access: yesIn Practice, Volume 48, Issue 4, Page 181-189, May 2026.
Background: The most commonly encountered small avian species in clinical practice are psittacines, such as budgerigars, cockatiels and lovebirds, and passerines, such as finches and canaries. These birds are increasingly presented for veterinary treatment, with owners expecting a high standard of care.

Integumentary fibrosarcoma in a free‐living swan (Cygnus olor): Medical and welfare considerations

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, May 2026.
Abstract A 10‐kg adult male mute swan (Cygnus olor) of unknown age was admitted for investigations of two large ventral masses overlying the keel bone, which were discharging purulent material. The masses measured 8.9 × 2.1 cm and 4.2 × 3.2 cm. Empirical treatment with non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs and antimicrobials was instigated.

Environmental DNA Metabarcoding Read Numbers Reveal Consistent Patterns of Microhabitat Use Among Fish Species Within Multiple Lakes and Tidal Creeks

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Environmental DNA metabarcoding detected consistent patterns in microhabitat use of fish species within lakes and tidal creeks. Although richness was similar among microhabitats, multivariate analyses revealed fine‐scale community differentiation aligned with known habitat preferences, demonstrating eDNA reveals habitat use at spatial scales of tens‐of‐

Bridging the gap: improving methodologies for future avian microbiome research

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2026, Issue 2, March 2026.
Recent advances in the field of wild avian microbiome research have significantly deepened our understanding of the eco‐evolutionary dynamics of bird–microbe interactions. Consequently, the field is now approaching a pivotal moment in uncovering the ultimate factors shaping avian microbiome structure, especially in relation to birds' ecological ...

Welfare assessment of turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo gallopavo) on farm

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract This Scientific Opinion assesses the welfare of turkeys of all ages (Meleagris gallopavo gallopavo) on farm in relation to the type and condition of the litter, type and availability of enrichment (including covered veranda and outdoor range), space allowance, concentrations of ammonia and carbon dioxide, effective environmental temperature ...
