Targeted Sphingolipid Analysis in Heart, Gizzard, and Breast Muscle in Chickens Reveals Possible New Target Organs of Fumonisins

open access: yesToxins, 2022
Alteration of sphingolipid synthesis is a key event in fumonisins toxicity, but only limited data have been reported regarding the effects of fumonisins on the sphingolipidome.

Incidence of Gizzard Erosion

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1941
Abstract THROUGH the courtesy of 22 poultry departments at various state experiment stations, this study of the incidence of gizzard erosion was made possible. Fifty to seventy-five eggs were furnished, gratis, by these departments, shipped to Durham, New Hampshire, and all hatched out in one incubator under identical conditions.

Chicken‐Gizzard Actin: Polymerization and Stability [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1980
Preparations of chicken gizzard actin obtained from acetone‐dried muscle powders prepared with various methods developed for skeletal muscle contain variable amounts of a β‐actinin‐like protein. This contamination is minimized if the procedure of muscle powder preparation includes washing with EDTA solution, and can be completely removed by gel ...

Gut Health in Ostriches (Struthio camelus): Insights Into Intestinal Structure, Functions, Microbiome, and Improvement Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Our paper systematically reviews the intestinal structure, function, and microbiota of ostriches, along with strategies for improving their gut health. We analyze how these factors collectively influence intestinal homeostasis and ostrich welfare, emphasizing probiotics as a promising intervention to enhance gut health, boost population well‐being, and

Nail in Chicken Gizzard [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1911
To the Editor: —The following account may prove of interest: I have before me, on my desk, a dried chicken gizzard which has been opened and cleaned in the usual manner. Through the thick part of one half is a round aperture, ⅛ of an inch in diameter—in the dried specimen—at the internal opening and ¼ of an inch in diameter on the external surface ...

Enhancing Meat Quality Through Dietary Fiber: Insights Into the Gut Microbiota‐Derived Short‐Chain Fatty Acids‐Muscle Axis

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Dietary fiber (DF) modulates meat quality through the gut‐muscle axis by reshaping gut microbiota, improving intestinal integrity, reducing inflammation, and regulating muscle metabolism. These mechanisms influence muscle fiber characteristics and post‐mortem biochemistry, thereby enhancing tenderness, juiciness, color, flavor, and nutritional value of

Effect of dietary Se on selenoprotein transcripts in gizzard (A-D, H) and pancreas (E-G).

open access: yes, 2016
Relative transcript levels are plotted for gizzard GPX1 (A), gizzard GPX3 (B), gizzard GPX4 (C), gizzard SELH (D), pancreas GPX3 (E), pancreas SELH (F), pancreas SEPP1 (G) and gizzard GPX2 (H) in poults supplemented with graded levels of dietary Se for ...

Waders in a sea of debris: a global overview

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The impact of plastic pollution on ecosystems and marine fauna is well documented, although research into its effects on waders (also known as shorebirds) remains limited. Given that waders are exposed to coastal marine litter, this exposure could be a significant factor in the decline of their populations. This study aims to assess the global

Food Contamination and Safety in Nigeria: A Systematic Synthesis of Heavy Metals, Microbial Pathogens, and Health Risk Metrics

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
This is an infographic driver of food contaminants and health effects. ABSTRACT Food safety remains a critical challenge in Nigeria due to rapid urbanization and weak regulatory enforcement. This systematic review synthesizes empirical evidence from 2015 to 2025 to characterize food contaminant profiles and associated human health risks in Nigeria ...

The gizzard-worm, and its transmission to chickens in Hawaii [PDF]

open access: yes, 1937
Gizzard-worms of poultry, Cheiloapirura hamulosa, are nematodes occurring in the gizzards of chickens and turkeys. Summary and Conclusions Previous to this report the carriers for the gizzard-worm in Hawaii were unknown.
