Glacial isostatic adjustment model with composite 3-D Earth rheology for Fennoscandia [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 2013
Models for glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) can provide constraints on rheology of the mantle if past ice thickness variations are assumed to be known. The Pleistocene ice loading histories that are used to obtain such constraints are based on an a priori 1-D mantle viscosity profile that assumes a single deformation mechanism for mantle rocks.

Effects of Andrade and Burgers rheologies on glacial isostatic adjustment modeling in Antarctica

open access: yesGeodesy and Geodynamics
Variations in ice mass deform the Earth and modify its gravity field, a process known as Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA). GIA in Antarctica remains poorly constrained due to the cumulative effect of past and present ice-mass changes, the unknown ...

A shallow approximation for ice streams sliding over strong beds

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2023
Ice streams are regions of rapid ice sheet flow characterised by a high degree of sliding over a deforming bed. The shallow shelf approximation (SSA) provides a convenient way to obtain closed-form approximations of the velocity and flux in a rapidly ...

Thermal controls on ice stream shear margins

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2021
Ice stream discharge responds to a balance between gravity, basal friction and lateral drag. Appreciable viscous heating occurs in shear margins between ice streams and adjacent slow-moving ice ridges, altering the temperature-dependent viscosity ...

Effects of impurities on the ice microstructure of Monte Perdido Glacier, Central Pyrenees, NE Spain

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2023
Monte Perdido Glacier, located in the central Pyrenees, is one of the southernmost glaciers in Europe. Due to climate change, this glacier is suffering an accelerated mass loss, especially in the last decades.

Post-glacial rebound and transient lower mantle rheology [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Journal International, 1986
Summary. Although post-glacial rebound data have been conventionally interpreted as being governed by the steady state component of the mantle viscosity spectrum, the radial profile of this parameter, which is then inferred by fitting a model to observations, is characterized by the fact that it exhibits rather slight variation with depth.

GRACE constraints on Earth rheology of the Barents Sea and Fennoscandia [PDF]

open access: yesSolid Earth, 2020
The Barents Sea is situated on a continental margin and was home to a large ice sheet at the Last Glacial Maximum. Studying the solid Earth response to the removal of this ice sheet (glacial isostatic adjustment; GIA) can give insight into the subsurface

Variational inference of ice shelf rheology with physics-informed machine learning

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2023
Floating ice shelves that fringe the coast of Antarctica resist the flow of grounded ice into the ocean. One of the key factors governing the amount of flow resistance an ice shelf provides is the rigidity (related to viscosity) of the ice that ...

High-resolution LiDAR mapping of glacial landforms and ice stream lobes in Finland [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Geological Society of Finland, 2017
Newly available high resolution airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) technology is generating unprecedented next-generation imagery of Earth surface features. LiDAR datasets are being employed by the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) as part of

Upward Expansion of Supra-Glacial Debris Cover in the Hunza Valley, Karakoram, During 1990 ∼ 2019

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2020
Supra-glacial debris cover is key to glacier ablation through increasing (thin debris layer) or decreasing (thick debris layer) melt rates, thereby regulating the mass balance of a glacier and its meltwater runoff.
