. The glaciers of the Cordillera Blanca, Peru, are rapidly retreating and thinning as a result of climate change, altering the timing, quantity and quality of water available to downstream users.

'Calving laws', 'sliding laws' and the stability of tidewater glaciers [PDF]
A new calving criterion is introduced, which predicts calving where the depth of surface crevasses equals ice height above sea level. Crevasse depth is calculated from strain rates, and terminus position and calving rate are therefore functions of ice ...

Glacial dynamics in pre-Alpine narrow valleys during the Last Glacial Maximum inferred by lowland fluvial records (northeast Italy) [PDF]
During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), most of the major glaciated basins of the European Southern Alps had piedmont lobes with large outwash plains; only a few glaciers remained within the valley.

Glaciers have experienced a global trend of recession within the past century. Quantification of glacier variations using satellite imagery has been of great interest due to the importance of glaciers as freshwater resources and as indicators of climate ...

Evolution of drainage system morphology at a land-terminating Greenland outlet glacier [PDF]
This work was funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (through grants to Nienow, Mair, and Wadham, and a studentship to Bartholomew), the Edinburgh University Moss Centenary Scholarship (Cowton and Bartholomew), and a Carnegie Research ...

Changes in glacier dynamics in the northern Antarctic Peninsula since 1985
. The climatic conditions along the northern Antarctic Peninsula have shown significant changes within the last 50 years. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of temporally and spatially detailed observations of the changes in ice dynamics along both

Using the Photostationary State of Arylazopyrazoles to Control Phase Transitions of Liquid Crystals
A series of new arylazopyrazole photoswitches is designed as dopants for liquid crystalline materials. Unprecedented, the distribution of photoisomers at the photostationary state upon irradiation with light of specific wavelengths (365, 460, 520 nm) is used to control the liquid crystalline phase transitions under isothermal conditions, including ...

Dynamics of Erebus Glacier Tongue [PDF]
Recent measurements conducted on Erebus Glacier Tongue (EGT) have enabled improvements to be made to previous analyses of earlier data (Holdsworth 1974). The use of LANDSAT imagery and controlled aerial photography up to 1978 have enabled glacier flow rates and hence strain-rates to be determined more accurately than before.
