One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.

Receptors for hyaluronic acid and poliovirus: a combinatorial role in glioma invasion? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: CD44 has long been associated with glioma invasion while, more recently, CD155 has been implicated in playing a similar role. Notably, these two receptors have been shown closely positioned on monocytes.

Chromobox protein homolog 7 suppresses the stem-like phenotype of glioblastoma cells by regulating the myosin heavy chain 9-NF-κB signaling pathway

open access: yesCell Death Discovery
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are significant factors in the treatment resistance and recurrence of glioblastoma. Chromobox protein homolog 7 (CBX7) can inhibit the progression of various tumors, but its impact on the stem cell-like properties of glioblastoma

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Alkaloids of fascaplysin are promising chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of glioblastoma: Review

open access: yes, 2020
Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive human brain tumors. Even following all the modern protocols of complex treatment, the median patient survival typically does not exceed 15 months.

Small-Molecule XIAP Inhibitors Enhance γ-Irradiation-Induced Apoptosis in Glioblastoma

open access: yesNeoplasia: An International Journal for Oncology Research, 2009
Because evasion of apoptosis can cause radioresistance of glioblastoma, there is a need to design rational strategies that counter apoptosis resistance.

A New Pathway Promotes Adaptation of Human Glioblastoma Cells to Glucose Starvation

open access: yesCells, 2020
Adaptation of glioblastoma to caloric restriction induces compensatory changes in tumor metabolism that are incompletely known. Here we show that in human glioblastoma cells maintained in exhausted medium, SHC adaptor protein 3 (SHC3) increases due to ...

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

O-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) mRNA expression predicts outcome in malignant glioma independent of MGMT promoter methylation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: We analyzed prospectively whether MGMT (O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase) mRNA expression gains prognostic/predictive impact independent of MGMT promoter methylation in malignant glioma patients undergoing radiotherapy with ...
