Chemoresistance in gliomas

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 2008
Despite improved knowledge and advanced treatments of gliomas, the overall survival rate for glioma patients remains low. Gliomas comprise of significant cell heterogeneity that contains a large number of multidrug resistant (MDR) phenotypes and cancer stem cells (CSCs), a combination that may contribute to the resistance to treatment.

Angiogenesis in Gliomas

2009
Angiogenesis, the sprouting of new blood vessels from preexisting blood vessels, is a hallmark of glioma progression. Malignant gliomas are among the most lethal tumors with a very dismal prognosis, despite advances in standard therapy, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

AUTOTRANSPLANTATION OF GLIOMAS

Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology, 1964
1. Five patients with glioblastoma had minced tumor cells injected into the subcutaneous tissues of the thigh or abdomen, and, in two instances, a suspension of normal brain tissue was injected into a comparable site. 2. In the two instances in which normal brain cells were injected, no evidence of their survival or growth could be found. 3.

Grading of gliomas

Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 1997
The traditional schemes for grading gliomas, in particular astrocytomas, have not been widely accepted by the neuropathology community. At present, four systems are in use, separating either three or four grades of tumour. All four systems are histopathology-based.

Epidemiology of Gliomas

2014
Gliomas are the most common type of primary intracranial tumors. Some glioma subtypes cause significant mortality and morbidity that are disproportionate to their relatively rare incidence. A very small proportion of glioma cases can be attributed to inherited genetic disorders.

Origin of Gliomas

Seminars in Neurology, 2018
Malignant glioma is a common type of brain tumor that remains largely incurable. Although a definitive cell of origin of gliomas remains elusive, numerous population studies, sequencing efforts, and genetically engineered mouse models have contributed to our understanding of the early events that may lead to gliomagenesis.

Microsurgery of gliomas

Acta Neurochirurgica, 1986
The author describes his microsurgical operative technique used since 1980 for gliomatous tumours. Instead of extensive resection and lobectomy, a pergyral or intergyral persulcal approach with partial gyrectomy, interhemispheric, transsylvian and transventricular exposure of the tumour surface were used.

Surgery for Gliomas

2014
Surgical resection, with the goal of maximal tumor removal, is now standard of care for the overwhelming majority of newly diagnosed gliomas. In order to achieve this goal while minimizing the risk of postoperative neurologic deficits, intraoperative brain mapping remains the gold standard.
