Probabilistic characterization of seepage‐induced tunnel face failure via a two‐phase double‐point material point method

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
To address seepage‐induced tunnel face collapse, this study develops a two‐phase double‐point MPM framework to capture large‐deformation hydro‐mechanical interactions. Incorporating a cementation‐based constitutive model with dynamic permeability updates, the model is successfully validated against saturated granular‐column collapse experiments ...

Existential Risk Assessment and Global Catastrophic Risk Priorities

open access: yes
Humanity’s most severe threats now stem primarily from anthropogenic risks, and the report finds a widening mismatch between the scale of these risks and the institutions meant to manage them. As the document states, “the report’s central empirical finding is a persistent and widening gap between the scale of anthropogenic ...

Investigation on the mechanical behavior of the multiple‐layered lining structure of a water conveyance tunnel with high internal water pressure

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study presents large‐scale similarity model testing (geometric ratio 3.6) of an innovative multiple‐layered lining system—comprising exterior precast segments, middle self‐compacting concrete, and an interior steel pipe—for high‐pressure (0.75 MPa) water conveyance tunnels.

Dynamic prediction of coal and gas outburst risk based on quantitative analysis of stress–energy evolution and adaptive correction

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study quantitatively analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution of stress redistribution ahead of the working face by integrating coal seam distribution, tectonic stress anomalies, gas pressure, and mining‐induced disturbances. An R‐value criterion for coal and gas outburst (CGO) risk assessment was established based on energy principles.

Closed‐form stress solution and minimum safe burial depth correction for shallow‐buried large‐diameter energy storage chambers

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study develops a closed‐form solution for stress analysis of shallow‐buried large‐diameter compressed air energy storage (CAES) chambers, explicitly incorporating free surface, lateral pressure, and gravity gradient effects. Validated against numerical simulations, the solution accurately captures stress redistribution and reveals upward migration

Anode Materials Requirements for Potassium Ion Batteries: Challenges and Future Possibilities

open access: yesEcoEnergy, EarlyView.
This work identifies a critical scale‐up gap between laboratory battery research and industrial targets, driven by low active‐mass loadings and the omission of full‐cell metrics. We outline concrete strategies to bridge this divide, shifting focus toward high‐loading electrodes (> 3 mg cm−2) to ensure practical commercial viability of potassium ion ...
