Ionospheric precursors of earthquakes and Global Electric Circuit
Advances in Space Research, 2014Abstract The electromagnetic coupling between the seismically activated area and the ionosphere is considered within the framework of the Global Electric Circuit (GEC) conception. First we consider the anomalous variations in the ionosphere associated with the earthquake preparation process, their temporal and spatial characteristics using the ...

On a clear day, there is a downward electric field of 100 to 300 volts/meter at Earth's surface, although this field is not noticeable in daily life. That is, one does not encounter a 1 kV potential difference when getting into a car on an upper floor in a parking garage, and electrocution is not the major hazard associated with jumping out of trees ...

The global electrical circuit as global thermometer
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1992Local observations in the tropics show that lightning activity increases strongly with the wet bulb potential, θw, of boundary layer air. The surface wet bulb temperature controls the vigor of convection and the accumulation of ice phase condensate in the mixed phase region of tropical convection, the apparent seat of lightning activity.

On the global atmospheric electrical circuit
Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1990Abstract A model of global atmospheric electric circuit has been developed, which incorporates the pollution due to aerosol particles of anthropogenic and volcanic origins and the ionization caused by the coronal discharges due to intense electric field beneath thunderclouds in the atmospheric layers close to the earth's surface.

On Parameterization of the Global Electric Circuit Generators
Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics, 2016We consider the problem of generator parameterization in the global electric circuit (GEC) models. The relationship between the charge density and external current density distributions inside a thundercloud is studied using a one-dimensional description and a three-dimensional GEC model. It is shown that drastic conductivity variations in the vicinity

Geophysical studies of the global electric circuit
Izvestiya, Physics of the Solid Earth, 2008Physical mechanisms of formation of the global electric circuit (GEC) are considered and energy estimates are obtained for aeroelectric processes. Global thunderstorm activity, the electrodynamics of mesoscale convective systems, the electric fields of the magnetospheric dynamo and ionospheric dynamo region, and the electrostatic field of the global ...

Seasonal variation of the global electrical circuit
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1996The effects of boundary layer aerosol particles on the electric field measurement of the DC global circuit are considered. Aitken (condensation) nuclei concentrations are found to have systematic local seasonal variations which obscure the global behavior of the DC circuit.

Recent progress on the global electrical circuit
Atmospheric Research, 2014Abstract Research work on the global electrical circuit (GEC) is reviewed, with an emphasis on the period since the last International Conference on Atmospheric Electricity (ICAE) in Beijing, China in 2007. This review was presented initially (in more abbreviated form) at the ICAE in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August 2011.

The global electrical circuit: A review
Atmospheric Research, 2009Research topics on the global electrical circuit are addressed that have received attention in recent years. These topics include the diurnal variation of the global circuit, surface measurements of electric field at high latitude, the annual variation, the semiannual variation, the role of lightning as a source for the global circuit, the electrical ...

Conduction current and extraneous electric current in the global electric circuit
Russian Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2015The role of the conduction current and extraneous electric current in the global electric circuit is considered. The current associated with the formation of thunderstorm and rain clouds charges the ionosphere positively relative to the Earth and creates a potential difference of ~250 kV between them.
