Mechanisms of Projected Changes in Thunderstorm Downburst Environments Across the United States

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract Responses of downdraft convective available potential energy (DCAPE) to global warming were investigated using the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) under a high‐emission scenario through the year 2100. DCAPE is projected to increase by 5%–12% on average in most areas, independently of wind shear.

Advancing Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Simulation and Projection With Eddy‐Resolving Climate Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract Tropical cyclone (TC) plays a critical role in driving hydrological extremes. However, current generation climate models often fail to capture TC inner‐core dynamical structures, leading to substantial underestimation (>50%) of TC rainfall (TCR).

Spring Dust in Colorado Plateau: Transport Pathways and Interannual Variability Derived From Two Decades of MERRA‐2 Reanalysis

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract Spring dust storms in the U.S. Southwest significantly impact environmental and human systems, yet their climatological patterns and driving mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using two decades of MERRA‐2 reanalysis data and self‐organizing map clustering, we identified four distinct dust transport pathways from surrounding and remote ...

Contrasting the Roles of Deep and Shallow Convection in Tropical Gross Moist Stability

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the roles of deep and shallow convection in shaping tropical gross moist stability (GMS) and its related quantities—gross dry stability (GDS) and gross moisture stratification (GQS)—under convective quasi‐equilibrium constraints.

Increasing Frequency and Persistence of the Summertime Greenland High Regime Not Captured by a Seasonal Prediction Model Very Large Ensemble

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract Weather regimes are widely used in weather prediction, but less often to study climate variability and change. Here, we use a year‐round North American regime classification to identify summertime circulation trends from 1981 to 2024. We find large increases in the frequency, persistence and interannual variability of the Greenland High (GH ...
