Climate change and circulation types in the Alpine region

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2017
The frequency of circulation types over the Alpine region is explored using 20 different global and regional climate model chains. The projected changes in these circulation types are investigated for the 21st century using the SRES A1B scenario.

Regional quasigeoid determination in Northern Germany and comparison with GPS [PDF]

open access: yes
For the northern part of the Federal Republic of Germany, new quasigeoid solutions were computed by least squares collocation and fast Fourier transformation (FFT) techniques using point and mean gravity data, a digital terrain model, and a global ...

The impact of the new Earth gravity models on the measurement of the Lense-Thirring effect

open access: yes, 2003
In this paper we use, in a preliminary way, the recently released EIGEN2 Earth gravity model, which is based on six months of data of CHAMP only, in order to reassess the systematic error due to the mismodelling in the even zonal harmonics of ...

Subtropical Atmospheric Response to Extratropical SST Warming in the Western North Pacific Under Atmospheric Internal Variability

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract Sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) region have been increasingly recognized as playing a key role in shaping the extratropical air–sea interactions. However, the extent to which such extratropical SST forcing can influence large‐scale atmospheric circulation and surrounding SST remains uncertain ...

On Applicability of the Radially Integrated Geopotential in Modelling Deep Mantle Structure

open access: yesGeosciences
A long-wavelength geoidal geometry reflects mainly lateral density variations in the Earth’s mantle, with the most pronounced features of the Indian Ocean Geoid Low and the West Pacific and North Atlantic Geoid Highs.

Towards the Selection of an Optimal Global Geopotential Model for the Computation of the Long-Wavelength Contribution: A Case Study of Ghana

open access: yesGeosciences, 2017
The selection of a global geopotential model (GGM) for modeling the long-wavelength for geoid computation is imperative not only because of the plethora of GGMs available but more importantly because it influences the accuracy of a geoid model.

Future Weakening of the Kuroshio Extension Decadal Variability Revealed by an Eddy‐Resolving Global Climate Model

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract The Kuroshio Extension (KE) exhibits pronounced decadal variability, influencing marine ecosystems, fisheries, and regional climate. However, how anthropogenic warming affects this variability remains uncertain due to limited satellite records and model resolution constraints.

Interaction of the westerlies with the Tibetan Plateau in determining the Mei-Yu termination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
This study explores how the termination of the mei-yu is dynamically linked to the westerlies impinging on the Tibetan Plateau. It is found that the mei-yu stage terminates when the maximum upper-tropospheric westerlies shift beyond the northern edge of ...

Benchmarking the Dynamic Modes of Stratosphere‐Troposphere Coupling in Northern Annular Modes (NAM) in CMIP6 Models

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract The downward influence of extreme stratospheric events is typically described by the evolution of the Northern Annular Mode (NAM) across atmospheric levels. However, the dynamics and uncertainty in vertical coupling are not fully resolved. By applying the linear inverse model (LIM) to daily, multi‐level NAM indices from reanalysis and CMIP6 ...

Evaluating Atmospheric River Impacts on Energy and Moisture Transport in the Arctic Using Different Detection Algorithms

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) significantly impact the Arctic climate system by enhancing atmospheric heat and moisture transport and altering the local energy budget. Developing AR detection tools (ARDTs) is critical yet challenging. This study evaluates 12 ARDTs in the Arctic to assess their performance in representing atmospheric heat ...
