Earth's future climate and its variability simulated at 9 km global resolution [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Dynamics
Earth's climate response to increasing greenhouse gas emissions occurs on a variety of spatial scales. To assess climate risks on regional scales and implement adaptation measures, policymakers and stakeholders often require climate change information on

Soft Neural Interfaces for Circuit‐Level Analysis of Magnetogenetic Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease Models

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Magnetogenetic deep brain stimulation (MG‐DBS) represents a wireless neuromodulation that has demonstrated long‐lasting behavioral benefits in Parkinson's disease models. However, the circuit‐level mechanisms underlying these therapeutic effects have remained uncharacterized due to limitations of conventional neural interfaces.

Assessment of Convectively Generated Tropical Cirrus in Global Storm-Resolving Models

open access: yes, 2021
Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2021Pervasive cirrus clouds in the upper troposphere and tropical tropopause layer (TTL) in- fluence the climate by altering the top-of-atmosphere radiation balance and stratospheric water vapor budget.

Model inter-comparison for global high-resolution simulations (D1.2)

open access: yes, 2020
The DYAMOND project (DYnamics of the Atmospheric general circulation Modeled On Non-hydrostatic Domains) is the first initiative for a model intercomparison of global storm resolving (km-scale) climate simulations. The analysis of these simulations helps

Respiratory Organ‐on‐a‐Chip for Disease Modeling: From Architecture to Functional Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Respiratory organ‐on‐a‐chip (ROC) models capture key mechanical and cellular cues of the human respiratory system, enabling quantitative dissection of disease mechanisms. This review links ROC architectures to disease modeling, functional integration, and commercialization, and proposes a decision framework that aligns model complexity with mechanistic

Water Permeates and Plasticizes Amorphous Carbon Dots: Unraveling the Inner Accessibility of the Nanoparticles by Glass Transition Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The water permeability of amorphous carbon dots (CDs) is demonstrated by investigating their plasticization. Novel polyamide‐based and amorphous nanoparticles are synthesized by controlling their inner packing density. Water plasticization is evidenced by the decrease of the CDs glass transition temperature with increasing the hydration degree.

Precipitation Characteristics and Thermodynamic‐Convection Coupling in Global Kilometer‐Scale Simulations

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
We compare three global kilometer‐scale models (ICON, IFS and NICAM) to clarify the advantages and challenges of high‐resolution global weather and climate modeling, using different approaches to represent convection, from fully parameterized to fully ...

Mechanisms controlling primary and new production in a global ecosystem model – Part II: The role of the upper ocean short-term periodic and episodic mixing events [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2006
The use of 6 h, daily, weekly and monthly atmospheric forcing resulted in dramatically different predictions of plankton productivity in a global 3-D coupled physical-biogeochemical model. Resolving the diurnal cycle of atmospheric variability by use of

Atomistic Mechanisms Triggered by Joule Heating Effects in Metallic Cu‐Bi Nanowires for Spintronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bi doped metallic Cu nanowires are promising for spintronics thanks to the stabilization of a giant spin Hall effect. However, heat resulting from current injection forces Bi to leave solution, forcing segregation into monoatomic decorations which evolve into coherent crystalline aggregates.
