Correcting coarse-grid weather and climate models by machine learning from global storm-resolving simulations

open access: yes, 2021
Global atmospheric `storm-resolving' models with horizontal grid spacing of less than 5~km resolve deep cumulus convection and flow in complex terrain.

Optoelectronic Synaptic Devices Using Molecular Telluride Phase‐Change Inks for Three‐Factor Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Optoelectronic synaptic devices based on solution‐processed molecular telluride GST‐225 phase‐change inks are demonstrated for three‐factor learning. A global optical signal broadcast through a silicon waveguide induces non‐volatile conductance updates exclusively in locally electrically flagged memristors.

Horizontal Grid Spacing Convergence of Aquaplanet Experiments Using a Global‐Storm Resolving Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Aquaplanet experiments are used to investigate the statistical convergence of the Global Storm‐Resolving model (GSRM) ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) model, under successive, two‐fold horizontal grid spacing refinements from 160 to 1.25 km.

Cloud-resolving simulations of mercury scavenging and deposition in thunderstorms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This study examines dynamical and microphysical features of convective clouds that affect mercury (Hg) wet scavenging and concentrations in rainfall.

Disordered Carbon Shells Enable Shape Dependent Fluorescence Enhancement in Nanodiamond Quantum Sensors Revealed by Correlative TEM–Fluorescence Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Molten KNO2 treatment induces a lowrefractive index disordered carbon shell on fluorescent nanodiamonds, enhancing fluorescence emission while preserving spin coherence. Machine learningassisted correlative TEMPL enables direct single‐particle resolution of this enhancement relative to air‐oxidized nanodiamonds of similar morphology, establishing a ...

Amplified European Future Warming Under Mesoscale‐Resolving Sea Surface Temperature Forcing

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Mesoscale SST features influence the atmospheric circulation via strong air–sea interactions. Yet, their contribution to regional climate change remains uncertain. Using a ∼16‐km global atmospheric model forced with mesoscale‐resolving and ‐smoothed SSTs,

The Impact of Resolving Subkilometer Processes on Aerosol‐Cloud Interactions of Low‐Level Clouds in Global Model Simulations

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2020
Subkilometer processes are critical to the physics of aerosol‐cloud interaction (ACI) but have been dependent on parameterizations in global model simulations.

Impact of Domain Size on Tropical Precipitation Within Explicit Convection Simulations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
We investigate the sensitivity of modeled tropical precipitation accumulation, intensity and structures to the extent of convection‐permitting limited area model (LAM) domain size.

Observations of ozone production in a dissipating tropical convective cell during TC4 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
From 13 July–9 August 2007, 25 ozonesondes were launched from Las Tablas, Panama as part of the Tropical Composition, Cloud, and Climate Coupling (TC4) mission. On 5 August, a strong convective cell formed in the Gulf of Panama.

Elucidating the Role of Surface Ligands on the Oxidative Etching of Au Bipyramids During Photothermia Using Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gold bipyramids can act as efficient plasmonic nanoheaters, but they often reshape during laser heating. This study shows that oxygen nanobubbles drive oxidative etching and that surface ligands control stability. CTAB‐ and citrate‐coated particles blunt and lose optical performance, whereas polystyrene sulfonate preserves shape and heating by ...
