Empirical Evidence of a Bet‐Hedging Strategy in the Carrot Cyst Nematode Heterodera carotae

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2025.
Phytoparasitic cyst nematodes with narrow host range are expected to develop a diversified temporal bet‐hedging strategy as they cannot predict the presence and quality of host plants. The present work confirmed this hypothesis for the first time in a plant‐parasitic nematode, Heterodera carotae.

Can arctic seaweed extracts be used as biological nematicides against potato cyst-forming nematode? [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
The study was aimed on the assessment of extracts from two arctic brown seaweeds Ascophyllum nodosum and Laminaria digitata as biological nematicides against phytoparasitic nematodes. Potato cyst-forming nematode Globodera rostochiensis Woll. was used as

Drone Imagery and Metabarcoding as Diagnostic Tools of Poor Growth in Potato Fields, With an Emphasis on Nematodes

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 74, Issue 6, Page 1612-1621, August 2025.
Combining aerial photography and metabarcoding offers a promising possibility to identify biological drivers of growth differences across organism groups at field scale. ABSTRACT Metabarcoding targeting nematodes, bacteria, fungi and oomycetes was used in combination with multispectral drone imagery and traditional soil extraction of nematodes to ...

Patchy Distribution of Potato Cyst Nematodes Within Single Arable Fields Reveals Local Disease Suppressiveness Mediated by Disparate Microbial Communities

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 5, May 2025.
We investigated whether a patchy field distribution of potato cyst nematodes (PCN) resulted from local heterogeneity in disease suppression. The biotic origin of suppression in soils was confirmed, and elevated abundances of fungal (e.g., Metacordyceps chlamydosporia) and bacterial (e.g., Pseudomonas fluorescens) nematode antagonists were positively ...

Search for resistance sources to Globodera pallida and potato virus X in the collection of potato varieties using molecular markers

open access: yesБиотехнология и селекция растений, 2019
Great damage to potato production is caused by cyst nematodes, which include two species: Globodera pallida (Stone) Behrens, the object of external quarantine, and Globodera rostochiensis (Wollenweber) Behrens, the object of internal quarantine in the ...

Expression of endochitinase and exochitinase in lettuce chloroplasts increases plant biomass and kills fungal pathogen Candida albicans

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 5, Page 1437-1451, May 2025.
Expression of exochitinase and endochitinase in lettuce highlights the potential of chloroplast genetic engineering for sustainable agriculture and biomedical applications, offering a safer alternative to chemical fertilizers and fungicides. Summary Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is a popular leafy vegetable with global production of ~28 million Mt ...

All Roads Lead to Rome: Pathways to Engineering Disease Resistance in Plants

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 5, February 3, 2025.
Crops lost to diseases necessitate a deeper understanding of plant immunity and the development of disease resistance. Here, the arms‐race between plants and pathogens is briefly described, and a comprehensive overview of the current and emerging strategies for engineering disease resistance in plants is provided.
