Bilateral globus pallidus infarcts in ecstasy use
A 41-year-old man was found unconscious at his home by a friend. He was immediately admitted to the hospital through the emergency department. At the emergency department he regained consciousness. He mentionned he had a few alcoholic beverages the night before but otherwise clinical history was negative.

Chaotic Desynchronization as the Therapeutic Mechanism of Deep Brain Stimulation [PDF]
High frequency deep-brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (deep brain stimulation, DBS) relieves many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in humans and animal models.

Neurokinin-1 receptor activation in globus pallidus [PDF]
The undecapeptide substance P has been demonstrated to modulate neuronal activity in a number of brain regions by acting on neurokinin-1 receptors. Anatomical studies revealed a moderate level of neurokinin-1 receptor in rat globus pallidus. To determine the electrophysiological effects of neurokinin-1 receptor activation in globus pallidus, whole-cell

Electrophysiological Characteristics of Globus Pallidus Neurons [PDF]
Extracellular recordings in primates have identified two types of neurons in the external segment of the globus pallidus (GPE): high frequency pausers (HFP) and low frequency bursters (LFB). The aim of the current study was to test whether the properties of HFP and LFB neurons recorded extracellularly in the primate GPe are linked to cellular ...

Role of the globus pallidus in motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. [PDF]
The globus pallidus plays a pivotal role in the basal ganglia circuit. Parkinson’s disease is characterized by degeneration of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra, which leads to dopamine deficiency in the brain that subsequently manifests ...

Deep brain stimulation imposes complex informational lesions. [PDF]
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy has become an essential tool for treating a range of brain disorders. In the resting state, DBS is known to regularize spike activity in and downstream of the stimulated brain target, which in turn has been ...

Altered effective connectivity network of the basal ganglia in low-grade hepatic encephalopathy: a resting-state fMRI study with Granger causality analysis. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The basal ganglia often show abnormal metabolism and intracranial hemodynamics in cirrhotic patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Little is known about how the basal ganglia affect other brain system and is affected by other brain ...

Hyperintensities within the bilateral globus pallidus on T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were present in some liver cirrhosis patients with hepatic encephalopathy. The symptoms of covert hepatic encephalopathy are similar to those of mild dementia.
