Glomus tumors of the trachea are rare and benign, but most become symptomatic, so they need intervention. A 21-year-old man was evaluated due to cough and hemoptysis. Computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed a polypoid mass above the carina. The tumor was removed completely by rigid bronchoscopy. The pathologic diagnosis was glomus tumor.

TINNITUS is a common otologic complaint. It is difficult to decide which type of tinnitus should be more thoroughly evaluated. Unilateral tinnitus is a symptom that may indicate serious disease such as an acoustic neuroma. When the sound is pulsating, as well as unilateral, one must be suspicious of a glomus tumor.

The vast majority of these cases reported have been concerned with small solitary tumors situated on an extremity which were characteristically extremely sensitive to slightest pressure.

A 53-year-old woman with left vocal cord paralysis was seen for sharp shooting pains in the left side of the neck and the left shoulder and upper arm. Glomus jugulare tumor was diagnosed, based on clinical findings and results of angiography and computed tomography. Because surgery was contraindicated, radiotherapy was used.

ABSTRACT To the Editor:— I agree with the comments by Dr. Raymond Schiffman. The term "glomus jugulare tumor" (or nonchromaffin paraganglioma of glomus jugulare; or chemodectoma of glomus jugulare) obviously cannot apply to histologically similar tumors which do not arise from the normal structure which bears that name.
