Rosmarinic Acid, a Rosemary Extract Polyphenol, Increases Skeletal Muscle Cell Glucose Uptake and Activates AMPK [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Skeletal muscle is a major insulin-target tissue and plays an important role in glucose homeostasis. Impaired insulin action in muscles leads to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Co‐overexpression of the caloric restriction‐induced mitochondrial factors PGC‐1α and MIPEP upregulates Phospho1 expression in adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caloric restriction that extends lifespan induces the expression of PGC‐1α and MIPEP in white adipose tissue. In this study, co‐overexpression of Pgc‐1α and Mipep upregulated the gene expression of PHOSPHO1. These findings provide new insights into mitochondria‐related mechanisms underlying the effects of caloric restriction in adipocytes.

BCS1L‐Associated Disease: 5′‐UTR Variant Shifts the Phenotype Towards Axonal Neuropathy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives To investigate the consequences of a pathogenic missense variant (c.838C>T; p.L280F) and a 5′‐UTR regulatory variant (c.‐122G>T) in BCS1L on disease pathogenesis and to understand how regulatory variants influence disease severity and clinical presentation.

Cognitive Resilience in Apolipoprotein ε4 Carrier Women Predicted by Neuron‐Derived Extracellular Vesicles

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The Apolipoprotein (APOE) ε4 allele is the strongest genetic risk factor for late‐onset Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, many ε4 carriers remain cognitively intact into old age. Leveraging plasma neuron‐derived extracellular vesicles (NDEVs), we sought to identify biomarkers of cognitive resilience and their interplay with APOE ...

β3-Adrenergically induced glucose uptake in brown adipose tissue is independent of UCP1 presence or activity: Mediation through the mTOR pathway

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism, 2017
Objective: Today, the presence and activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in adult humans is generally equated with the induced accumulation of [2-18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ([18F]FDG) in adipose tissues, as investigated by positron emission ...

The effects of capillary transit time heterogeneity (CTH) on the cerebral uptake of glucose and glucose analogs:Application to FDG and comparison to oxygen uptake.

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2016
Glucose is the brain’s principal source of ATP, but the extent to which cerebral glucose consumption (CMRglc) is coupled with its oxygen consumption (CMRO2) remains unclear.

Spectral tracing of deuterium for imaging glucose metabolism. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Cells and tissues often display pronounced spatial and dynamical metabolic heterogeneity. Common glucose-imaging techniques report glucose uptake or catabolism activity, yet do not trace the functional utilization of glucose-derived anabolic products ...

Associations of Stroke With Risk of Epilepsy: Results From the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To estimate the risk of epilepsy associated with stroke in a community‐based cohort, with consideration of stroke type, number, and severity. Methods Data from 15,100 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study participants without stroke at baseline (1987–1989) were analyzed through 12/31/2022.

Effect of glucose availability on glucose transport in bovine mammary epithelial cells

open access: yesAnimal, 2012
Primary bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMEC) were cultured in media containing varying concentrations of glucose, to determine the effects of glucose availability on glucose transport and its mechanism in bovine mammary gland.

The novel family of Warbicin® compounds inhibits glucose uptake both in yeast and human cells and restrains cancer cell proliferation

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
Many cancer cells share with yeast a preference for fermentation over respiration, which is associated with overactive glucose uptake and breakdown, a phenomenon called the Warburg effect in cancer cells. The yeast tps1Δ mutant shows even more pronounced
