Glucose variability, HbA1c and microvascular complications

Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders, 2016
Microvascular complications in diabetes are associated with poor long-term diabetes control as measured by HbA1c levels. Glucose fluctuations are related to oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and inflammation, factors traditionally associated with the pathogenesis of vascular damage.

Assessment of glucose variability in subjects with prediabetes

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2019
The aim of the study was to assess glucose variability in subjects with prediabetes by means of CGM.32 subjects with prediabetes - mean age 56.6 ± 9.6 years, mean BMI 30.3 ± 5.3 kg/m2 and 18 subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) - mean age 54.4 ± 9.9 years, mean BMI 24.8 ± 6.9 kg/m2, were enrolled.

Glucose Variability and Coronary Artery Disease

Heart Lung and Circulation, 2019
Fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose and glycated haemoglobin are considered three important indicators for diabetes treatment. There is increasing evidence that glucose variability has more detrimental effects on the coronary arteries than does chronic sustained hyperglycaemia.

Glucose variability: An emerging target for the treatment of diabetes mellitus

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2013
Alterations in glucose metabolism in individuals with diabetes have been considered for many years, as they appear at first glance, i.e., simply as hyperglycemia, and its surrogate marker, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), used both to estimate the risk of developing diabetic complications and to define the targets and measure the efficacy of diabetes ...

Glucose Variability in Diabetic Pregnancy

Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics, 2011
Background: Fetal overgrowth is the most important complication of gestational (GDM) and pregestational diabetes mellitus. Methods: We correlated maternal glucose profiles, as detected by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), with fetal

Case Discussion in Blood Glucose Variability

Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, 2011
Stress-induced hyperglycemia has been associated with poor outcomes and death in critically ill patients. Blood glucose (BG) variability, a component of stress-related hyperglycemia has recently been reported as a significant independent predictor of intensive care unit and hospital mortality.
