Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load

2016
The glycemic index (GI) ranks carbohydrates in food according to the extent to which they raise blood glucose levels after eating. The GI gives a rough estimation as to how quickly a 50-gram serving of a particular food converts to sugar and raises the blood glucose level above normal.

Glycemic Load and Chronic Disease

Nutrition Reviews, 2003
The glycemic index (GI) has proven to be a useful nutritional concept, providing new insights into the relationship between foods and chronic disease. Observational studies suggest that diets with a high glycemic load (GI x carbohydrate content) are independently associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Postprandial

Dietary glycemic load and atherothrombotic risk

Current Atherosclerosis Reports, 2002
Hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia are central features of the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus, which contribute to the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease (CHD). Recent data indicate that increased dietary glycemic load (GL) due to replacing fats with carbohydrates or increasing intake of rapidly absorbed carbohydrates (ie, high ...

Glycemic Load and Acne

2011
Acne affects 80–90% of individuals during puberty, which is a period associated with a normal decline in insulin sensitivity (Bloch et al, J Pediatr 110:481–487, 1987). Hyperinsulinemia stemming from insulin resistance may play a key role in activating a hormonal milieu conducive for acne development.

Glycemic index, glycemic load, and pulse wave reflection in adults

Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, 2015
Diets with a high glycemic index (GI), high glycemic load (GL), or both, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study examined the association of GI and GL in a regular diet with the peripheral augmentation index (i.e., a marker of vascular aging) in a sample of adults.Cross-sectional study.
