Dissociation of gaseous zwitterion glycine-betaine by slow electrons
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2010In this work, we investigate dissociation processes induced by low-energy electrons to gas phase N,N,N-trimethylglycine [glycine-betaine, (CH3)3N+CH2COO−] molecules. Glycine-betaine represents a model system for zwitterions. All negative fragments are observed to be produced only at subelectronic excitation energies (<4 eV).

The cryoprotective effects of glycine betaine on bacteria
Trends in Microbiology, 2002It is well known that in response to a decrease in environmental temperature, some plants and animals accumulate several cryoprotective substances inside the cell. However, the role of glycine betaine as a bacterial cryoprotectant is only beginning to be understood. The growth-enhancing effect of glycine betaine on the food-borne pathogen Listeria ...

Glycine betaine improves survival of fresh bovine spermatozoa
Reproduction, Fertility and Development, 2001Fresh spermatozoa from bulls established as ‘good freezers’ and ‘poor freezers’ (consistently =50% or <20% motile spermatozoa after cryopreservation, respectively) were incubated for 96 h in Tes/Tris–egg yolk or TALP–egg yolk media at 37°, 20°, 5° or 0°C.

Proline betaine (PB), a glycine betaine (GB) analogue found in citrus foods, increases urinary GB loss and plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations in rats. Its presence in human plasma is associated with increased GB excretion. To compare the effects of dietary levels of PB on GB excretion, and on plasma tHcy and GB concentrations in healthy ...

Same-day batch measurement of glycine betaine, carnitine, and other betaines in biological material
Analytical Biochemistry, 1992Glycine betaine, carnitine, carnitine esters, butyrobetaine, and proline betaine (stachydrine) concentrations in biological materials can be reliably measured in 100-microliters samples, with a detection limit below 1 mumol/liter. The procedure is suitable for batches of more than 30 specimens and it is possible to obtain a single result within 2 h ...

Formation and breakdown of glycine betaine and trimethylamine in hypersaline environments
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 1990Glycine betaine is accumulated as a compatible solute in many photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic bacteria--the last being unable to synthesize the compound--and thus large pools of betaine can be expected to be present in hypersaline environments.

Simultaneous determination of monoethanolamine and glycine betaine in plants
Journal of Chromatography A, 1989The association of monethanolamine (EA) and glycine betaine (GB) with drought resistance of plants requires the determination of these compounds in any study of stress physiology and of the alleviation of stress by bioregulators. Methods used for the determination of EA and GB include thin-layer chromatography (TLC), gas chromatography (GC) and high ...
