Review on Fatigue of Additive Manufactured Metallic Alloys: Microstructure, Performance, Enhancement, and Assessment Methods

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 36, Issue 17, April 25, 2024.
Additive manufactured metals have excellent mechanical properties, but their fatigue resistance is an exception. This article reviews the processes attributes, hierarchical microstructure, fatigue performance, and evaluation methods. The fatigue failure mechanisms of printed metals were summarized, and the competition between trans‐scale ...

Simulation of wire metal transfer in the cold metal transfer (CMT) variant of gas metal arc welding using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approach Simulation des Metalldrahttransfers bei der Kaltmetalltransfer‐Variante (CMT) des Metallschutzgasschweißens unter Verwendung des geglätteten Partikel‐basierten hydrodynamischen (SPH) Ansatzes

open access: yesMaterialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik, Volume 55, Issue 1, Page 62-71, January 2024.
In the present work a novel approach for the simulation of mass transfer in cold metal transfer variant of gas metal arc welding using smoothed particle hydrodynamics is provided. The hallmark of this process is the recoiling of the wire during the short‐circuit phase.

Approach for the probabilistic fatigue assessment of welded joints based on the local geometry of the weld seam

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 47, Issue 1, Page 88-107, January 2024.
Abstract Welded joints show large variation of the weld toe geometry along the weld seam, which is one important reason for the comparably large scatter in fatigue life. Therefore, it is crucial to take the local geometry at the weld toe into account, to reduce the conservatism in fatigue assessment of welded joints.

A Comparative Assessment of Chromium–Boron Hardfacing Using SMAW and FCAW Techniques

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
This research paper investigates the effectiveness of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux‐cored arc welding (FCAW) on mild steel substrates for chromium–boron hardfacing. Chromium–boron alloys are hard‐wearing and corrosion‐resistant materials used in industries where wear resistance is critical.
