Canola yield prediction and genotype selection using uncrewed aerial system multispectral imagery and machine learning models

open access: yesThe Plant Phenome Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Evaluation and selection of canola breeding lines across multiple years and locations are vital for variety development. However, accurately measuring canola (Brassica napus L.) yield under field conditions is challenging due to end‐of‐season events such as rain, windstorms, and hail, as well as variability in plant maturity and pod shattering.

Estimation of Nitrogen Content Using Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) in Sugarcane: Estimasi Kandungan Nitrogen Menggunakan Metode Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Indeks (GNDVI) di Tanaman Tebu

open access: yes
Sugarcane is one of the most widely cultivated plantation crops in Indonesia, but production has declined, particularly in Kapanewon Sedayu, Bantul, due to a suspected nitrogen deficiency. Nitrogen is required for the formation of buds, leaves, and stems.

Exploring the relationship between remote sensing-based vegetation indices and land surface temperature through quantitative analysis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Bulgarian Geographical Society
In an era of rapid urbanization, understanding the complex relationship between vegeta-tion dynamics and land surface temperature (LST) is crucial for addressing the challeng-es posed by urban heat island (UHI) and promoting sustainable urban development.

High‐throughput unmanned aerial vehicle phenomics and machine learning enables accurate early single‐plant biomass prediction in lettuce

open access: yesThe Plant Phenome Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) exhibits pronounced genotype and environment‐dependent growth variation, making early, non‐destructive single‐plant biomass prediction critical for breeding. However, harvest‐based measurements fail to capture growth dynamics.

Evaluation of uncrewed aerial system‐derived vegetation indices for forage trait phenomic prediction in oat–pea intercrop breeding trials

open access: yesThe Plant Phenome Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Accelerating genetic gain in intercrop forage breeding requires scalable phenotyping approaches that can capture both yield and quality variation across complex genotype combinations. This study evaluated the use of uncrewed aerial system (UAS)‐derived multispectral vegetation indices (VIs) for predicting forage yield and nutritive quality in ...

Predictive models of seed yield in intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium): The added value of a time series of multispectral imagery in semiarid environments

open access: yesAgronomy Journal, Volume 118, Issue 5, September/October 2026.
Abstract Accurate estimation of seed yield in perennial grains like Thinopyrum intermedium (intermediate wheatgrass [IWG]) remains a challenge due to high interannual and spatial variability of this important trait. We evaluated the potential of before‐harvest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)‐derived multispectral vegetation indices to predict IWG seed ...

A hierarchical unmanned aerial system–light detection and ranging–satellite learning framework for scaling heterogeneous vegetation cover mapping in rangelands

open access: yesGrassland Research, Volume 5, Issue 3, Page 245-269, September 2026.
This study shows how drones, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and satellites can be combined to map vegetation in rangelands more effectively. Drone imagery captures fine‐scale plant details, LiDAR adds information about vegetation structure and height, and satellite data allow the mapping approach to be expanded across larger areas.
