Sheep pox and goat pox are diseases of sheep and goats caused by pox virus. The variety and range of clinical signs produced by a single strains of virus in different breeds and age groups of animal tends to overlap those produced by different viruses within the same group or even different groups of pox viruses.

Out outbreak of goat pox occurred among 60 adult and young goats in the Sudan. Among the findings of special interest was the extensive and wide distribution of pox lesions on the bodies of the animals. The severe involvement of the mucous membranes of the muzzle, eyes and nostrils gave rise to acute respiratory distress and systemic reaction.

The Sersenk strain of goat pox virus first isolated in Iraq, grew on chorioallantoic membranes (CAM) of developing chicken embryos producing generalised large pocks, 2 to 3 mm in diameter, on the third day post-inoculation. The virus killed the inoculated embryos.

Spot agglutination test for the rapid diagnosis of goat pox

A spot agglutination test was standardised for the rapid diagnosis of goat pox using antigen and antibody systems after being coupled to glutaraldehyde-treated sheep erythrocytes. The sensitivity was comparable to that of counter-immunoelectrophoresis and reverse-phase passive haemagglutination tests.
