Immunomodulatory function of conjunctival goblet cells in ocular surface mucosa.

open access: yes, 2015
In response to an LPS-mediated stimulus, conjunctival goblet cells increase expression of TGF-ß2, and activate it in a TSP-1 dependent manner via a TSP-1 receptor, CD36.

Nanoplastics: Methods, Exposure and Effects on Domestic, Farm and Wild Animals

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Nanoplastics (NPs) are synthetic polymer particles ranging in size from 1 nm to 1 μm that have been identified as a major concern for ecosystems and organisms due to their plethora of negative effects. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge relating to exposure and effects of NPs in domestic (i.e., farm ...

Table_1_Mucosal affairs: glycosylation and expression changes of gill goblet cells and mucins in a fish–polyopisthocotylidan interaction.XLSX [Dataset]

open access: yes
[Introduction]: Secreted mucins are highly O-glycosylated glycoproteins produced by goblet cells in mucosal epithelia. They constitute the protective viscous gel layer overlying the epithelia and are involved in pathogen recognition, adhesion and ...

Cellular Toxicity of Short‐ and Long‐Term Exposures to Polystyrene Nanoplastics and Microplastics in Fish Skin Cell Derived From Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ubiquitous presence of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) is raising concerns about their impact on the health of humans and other living organisms. Due to its tiny size, this particle can accumulate and circulate in the body after uptake, resulting in a variety of harmful outcomes on the organism, such as increased oxidative stress and

The Enteric Nervous System: An Integrative Hub From Development to Systemic Physiology

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, EarlyView.
Unlike a static hardwired circuit, the ENS continuously remodels its transcriptional programs and synaptic connectivity in response to three ecological forces: microbial metabolites, immune cell signals and enteroendocrine cues. ABSTRACT The enteric nervous system (ENS) constitutes the largest and most functionally autonomous subdivision of the ...

Congenital short bowel syndrome: Clinical aspects by systematic review

open access: yesJPGN Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Objectives Congenital short bowel syndrome (CSBS) is a rare intestinal disorder characterized by inborn shortening of the bowel with mainly mutations in Coxsackie and Adenovirus receptor‐like membrane protein (CLMP) and Filamin A (FLNA) genes.

Regulation of goblet cells by diet and microbiota derived metabolites [PDF]

open access: yes
Trillions of commensal microbes, collectively called microbiota, reside in the mammalian intestine. Microbiota break down dietary components to produce metabolites that regulate the symbiotic relationship between the host and microbiota.

Effect of Notch1 on Vocal Fold Re‐Epithelization After Acute Injury

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
Conditional deletion of Notch1 in Lrig1‐expressing vocal fold epithelial cells impaired re‐epithelialization following naphthalene injury, resulting in sustained basal cell proliferation, abnormal epithelial differentiation, and prolonged inflammatory cell infiltration.
