The literature on substernal goiter from the seventeenth century to the present is reviewed. Substernal goiter may be defined as any thyroid enlargement that has its greater mass inferior to the thoracic inlet. Truly ectopic mediastinal goiters are rare, and most substernal goiters arise from and maintain some attachment to the cervical thyroid gland ...

Intrapericardial goiter cases are only a few in the literature. We present a 53-year-old woman who was operated for 8-cm anterior mediastinal mass located completely intrapericardial and histopathological examination revealed an ectopic goiter. It may be difficult to distinguish between mediastinal masses within or outside the pericardium. Thoracoscopy

MNG is a common clinical problem. Though most goiters are benign and asymptomatic, they may cause concern when they create compressive symptoms, develop autonomous functioning nodules, or form suspicious nodules. Diagnostic evaluation should include clinical evaluation, laboratory tests including TSH, and consideration of additional evaluation and ...

ENDEMIC GOITER remains one of the most widespread nutritional diseases in the world today. The major cause is iodine deficiency. The World Health Organization reports a high incidence of goiter in Thailand (where a program of iodine supplementation was instituted), in the mountains of Western Pakistan, Lebanon, Basutoland, and Kenya.

Retrosternal goiter is a common cause of compression of adjacent structures, and it may harbor cancer.During a 22-year period, we treated 44 patients with intrathoracic multinodular goiter. The goiter was resected in 40 patients; 4 patients were rejected because of prohibitive risk.

AbstractThe management of a substernal goiter is a problem which has challenged surgeons since its first description in 1749. While the overall incidence in the United States has decreased with the routine use of iodized salt, the development of large multinodular substernal goiters in the rest of the world is still common.
