Are RCTs the Gold Standard? [PDF]
The claims of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to be the gold standard rest on the fact that the ideal RCT is a deductive method: if the assumptions of the test are met, a positive result implies the appropriate causal conclusion. This is a feature that RCTs share with a variety of other methods, which thus have equal claim to being a gold standard.

Crosstalk between gut microbiota and tumor: tumors could cause gut dysbiosis and metabolic imbalance
In this research, we analyzed the relationship between gut microbiota and tumor. We discovered that both subcutaneous and metastatic tumors would alter the composition and metabolic function of gut microbiota. Meanwhile, fecal microbiota transplantation also indicated the anti‐tumor role of the gut microbiota, revealing the crosstalk between tumor and ...

Multiple sclerosis clinical decision support system based on projection to reference datasets
Abstract Objective Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a multifactorial disease with increasingly complicated management. Our objective is to use on‐demand computational power to address the challenges of dynamically managing MS. Methods A phase 3 clinical trial data (NCT00906399) were used to contextualize the medication efficacy of peg‐interferon beta‐1a vs ...

The mitosis‐related gene SKA1 was among 629 genes consistently dysregulated in OSCC across nine public gene expression datasets. In OSCC cell lines, SKA1 promoted proliferation and migration, enhanced radioresistance, and reduced radiation‐induced senescence.

Clinical utility of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers measured by LUMIPULSE® system
Abstract Objectives Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are well‐established in research settings, but their use in routine clinical practice remains a largely unexploited potential. Here, we examined the relationship between CSF biomarkers, measured by a fully automated immunoassay platform, and brain β‐amyloid (Aβ ...

A no-gold-standard technique to objectively evaluate quantitative imaging methods using patient data: Theory [PDF]
Objective evaluation of quantitative imaging (QI) methods using measurements directly obtained from patient images is highly desirable but hindered by the non-availability of gold standards. To address this issue, statistical techniques have been proposed to objectively evaluate QI methods without a gold standard.

Development of Gold Contacted Flip-chip Detectors with IMARAD CZT [PDF]
We present initial results from our evaluation of a gold-contacted pixellated detector using cadmium zinc telluride substrate produced by IMARAD Imaging Systems. The Horizontal Bridgman (HB) grown crystals from IMARAD have been shown to produce high resolution photopeaks, but they are also seen to have large leakage current.

Sequencing: Not Always the “Gold Standard” [PDF]
For the detection of point mutations (or variant alleles), PCR followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) detection is widely used and is probably one of the simplest methods for detection of known mutations. This method depends on the fact that the mutation of interest disrupts a recognition sequence for a restriction enzyme.
