Seasonal patterns of neurogenesis in European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are region‐ and sex‐specific

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 37, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Songbird vocal behavior, physiology, and brains—including neurogenesis—change between seasons. We examined seasonal differences in neurogenesis in three brain regions associated with vocal production and learning, HVC (letter‐based proper name), robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA), and Area X, and two brain regions associated with auditory ...

A Review on the Importance of Hormones Monitoring and Their Removal in Conventional Wastewater Treatment Systems

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Health and Sustainable Development, 2017
Introduction: Micro pollutants have become one of the most important environmental concerns around the world. These natural and synthetic compounds have been called Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) due to their interfere with the normal function of ...

From silence to song: Testosterone triggers extensive transcriptional changes in the female canary HVC

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 37, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Seasonal song production in canaries is influenced by gonadal hormones, but the molecular mechanisms underlying testosterone‐induced song development in adult female canaries, which rarely sing naturally, remain poorly understood. We explored testosterone‐induced song development in adult female canaries by comparing gene regulatory networks ...

Hypotheses in light detection by vertebrate ancient opsin in the bird brain

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 37, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Extra‐retinal photoreception is common across fish and avian species. In birds, the hypothalamus contains non‐visual photoreceptors that detect light and regulate multiple endocrine systems. To date, light‐dependent control of seasonal reproduction is one of the most well‐studied systems that require deep brain photoreception.

Early testosterone exposure during development advances myelination and affects neurogenesis of the vocal control motor path in male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata)

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 37, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Birdsong learning and production is mediated through a vocal control circuit that exhibits ubiquitous and profound sex differences. In zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) only males sing, and sex differences in both neuroanatomy and myelination of this circuit emerge during the first 3 months of life as song learning is taking place.
