Growth hormone, gonad development, and steroid levels in female carp

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Pharmacology, Toxicology and Endocrinology, 1996
The pituitary and plasma growth hormone (GH) levels of female carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were measured in fish of various sizes and degrees of maturity, and were matched against the levels of 17 beta-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17-P), and progesterone (P) in the ovary and plasma.

Effects of gonadal hormones on adrenal steroid metabolism in vitro

Steroids, 1972
Abstract The effects of gonadal hormones on adrenal steroidogenesis were studied in vitro . Cholesterol side-chain cleavage activity was stimulated by orchiectomy and the effect was reversed by testosterone replacement. Neither ovariectomy nor estradiol administration affected the reaction.

Influence of gonadal steroids on rat pituitary growth hormone secretion

Research in Experimental Medicine, 1990
Growth hormone (GH) secretion increases at the time of puberty, and both androgens and estrogens increase the GH response to provocative agents. Little is known, however, with regard to the mechanism or site of action of gonadal steroid-stimulated GH secretion.

Episodic Growth Hormone Secretory Pattern in Male Rats: Relationship to Gonadal Steroid Hormones

Journal of Veterinary Medicine Series A, 1989
SummaryIn the present study sequential blood samples were obtained from freely‐behaving male rats bearing chronic intracardial venous cannulae. Blood samples were obtained at 20 min intervals for 6 h from intact rats, castrated rats, castrated rats treated with either testosterone propionate (TP) or estradiol benzoate (EB) and intact rats treated with ...

Protection by gonadal steroid hormones against procarbazine-induced damage to spermatogenic function in LBNF1 hybrid rats.

Journal of Andrology, 1993
Some anti-cancer drugs, such as procarbazine (PCZ), are associated with irreversible damage to spermatogenic function and cause sterility in men. In the present study, protection of spermatogenesis by gonadal steroid hormones during PCZ treatment was ...

Gonadal Steroid Hormone Receptors and Social Behaviors

1989
In this chapter, we shall discuss one aspect of the cellular mechanism of action of steroid hormones on social behaviors, the role of steroid hormone receptors. Unfortunately, the study of cellular mechanisms of hormones is not compatible with many social behaviors.

Counteraction of Gonadal Steroid Inhibition of Luteinizing Hormone Release by Naloxone

Neuroendocrinology, 1982
The effect of naloxone on the negative feedback action of gonadal steroids on luteinizing hormone (LH) release was studied in castrated male and female rats. The reduction by estradiol benzoate or testosterone propionate of elevated serum LH levels in rats ovariectomized for 4 weeks was reversed by a single injection of naloxone. Injection of estradiol

Interactions of gonadal steroids, gonadotropins and gonadotropin-releasing hormones in sexual maturation

Journal of Steroid Biochemistry, 1979
Abstract Plasma and pituitary concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured in individual male rats pretreated with testosterone and its 5α-reduced metabolites for various lengths of time at various stages of sexual maturation. The degree of androgen induced inhibition of the gonadotropins depended on

Identification and biosynthesis of steroid hormones in the gonads ofCiona intestinalis

Experientia, 1971

Hormonal Control of Fish Reproductive Behavior: Brain–Gonadal Steroid Interactions

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1982
A number of hormones are known to influence reproductive behavior in teleosts. The best studied in this regard are the sex steroids estradiol and testosterone. Sufficient evidence is available to permit the outlining of possible modes of action of these hormones on mechanisms controlling reproductive responses in fishes. Autoradiographic studies using
