Episodic growth hormone secretory patterns in sheep: relationship to gonadal steroid hormones.
American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1977The influence of anabolic steroids on growth hormone (GH) secretion in ruminants remains unclear, perhaps because of the dynamic nature of GH secretion. In the present study, blood samples were obtained at 15-min intervals for 12 h from intact ram lambs, ram lambs castrated postpubertally, and castrated ram lambs treated with either testosterone ...

Regulation of astroglia by gonadal steroid hormones under physiological and pathological conditions
Progress in Neurobiology, 2016In the last years there has been a considerable advance in the knowledge on the regulation of astrocytes by sex steroids under physiological and pathological conditions. By the activation of a variety of nuclear and membrane receptors, sex steroid hormones regulate the functions of astrocytes and their communication with other cell types in the central

In vitro labeling of gonadal steroid hormone receptors in brain tissue sections
Steroids, 1995Autoradiographic methods have been developed for measurement of gonadal steroid receptors in situ in brain tissue sections. Based on principles established previously for estrogen receptors in the rat brain using a 125I-labeled ligand, procedures have been developed for in vitro labeling of estrogen, androgen, and progestin receptors with commercially ...

Luteinizing Hormone and Gonadal Steroid Levels During the Menstrual Cycle of Orangutans
Journal of Medical Primatology, 1984Scrum luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone. 17β‐estradiol, and testosterone were measured during a single cycle each of five female orangutans, and urinary LH was measured in four of those cycles. Midcycle peaks in LH and luteal phase elevations in progesterone (5.7–13.8 ng/ml) suggested that the cycles were ovulatory.

Effects of Gonadal Steroid Hormones on Amylase Secretion in Pancreatic Lobules of Rats
Pancreas, 2007Because functional changes of the pancreas during the ovarian cycle are not fully understood, effects of gonadal steroid hormones on pancreatic amylase content and secretion were investigated. The estrus cycle of female rats was confirmed by vaginal smear.

Diagnostic value of gonadal steroid hormones and gonadotropins in ovarian cystic lesions
Diagnostic Cytopathology, 1995AbstractDuring a 12‐mo period the fluid aspirated from 32 ovarian cystic lesions was assayed for 17β‐estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), testosterone (T), follicle‐stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). All cysts were subsequently subjected to histologic or cytologic examination. In 84.6% (11/13) of the proven follicular cysts, the E2 ...

Effects of Gonadal Steroids on Clearance of Growth Hormone at Steady State in the Rat*
Endocrinology, 1991Gonadal steroids have been implicated in the modulation of GH secretory patterns in the rat. We have studied the effects of testosterone (T) or estradiol (E2) on the steady state clearance (Clss) and plasma half-life (t1/2) of GH in male and female rats (n = 4-6/group). A femoral and a jugular cannula were surgically implanted into adult Sprague-Dawley

Modulation of glutamate receptor expression by gonadal steroid hormones in the rat striatum
Brain Research Bulletin, 2003The non-competitive N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist dizocilpine (MK-801) attenuates morphine-induced immediate-early gene expression in the rat striatum in a sexually dimorphic manner that depends in part on gonadal steroids. To determine if this effect was dependent on modulation of glutamate receptor gene expression, we studied the ...

Behavioral Effects of Gonadal Hormones and Contraceptive Steroids in Primates
1969Although there is no doubt that ovarian steroids are essential for the expression of sexual receptivity in those female mammals which show well-defined periods of oestrus or heat, the extent to which this holds true for the higher primates, including man, remains controversial.
