Contaminant Binding and Bioaccessibility in the Dust From the Ni-Cu Mining/Smelting District of Selebi-Phikwe (Botswana). [PDF]

open access: yesGeohealth, 2022
Abstract We studied the dust fractions of the smelting slag, mine tailings, and soil from the former Ni‐Cu mining and processing district in Selebi‐Phikwe (eastern Botswana). Multi‐method chemical and mineralogical investigations were combined with oral bioaccessibility testing of the fine dust fractions (<48 and <10 μm) in a simulated gastric fluid to

The use of Google EarthTM satellite imagery to detect the nests of masked boobies Sula dactylatra

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 210-216, June 2011., 2011
Abstract Masked boobies Sula dactylatra, like many other species of Sulidae, do not construct elaborate nests. However, their nest sites produce a characteristic ‘nest signature’. We found that these nest signatures could apparently be seen in freely available satellite images (Google EarthTM) of the main island of Ascension in the south Atlantic.

Calcium transfer and mass balance associated with soil carbonate in a semi‐arid silicate watershed (North Cameroon): An overlooked geochemical cascade?

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 7, Issue 1, Page 93-110, February 2021., 2021
Abstract Calcium is a key element of the Earth system and closely coupled to the carbon cycle. Weathering of silicate releases Ca, which is exported and sequestered in oceans. However, pedogenic calcium carbonate constitutes a second Ca‐trapping pathway that has received less attention.

An Integrated Agriculture, Atmosphere, and Hydrology Modeling System for Ecosystem Assessments

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 11, Issue 12, Page 4645-4668, December 2019., 2019
Abstract We present a regional‐scale integrated modeling system (IMS) that includes Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC), Weather Research and Forecast (WRF), Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ), and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) models.

Evaluating models of Coulomb stress transfer: Is variable fault geometry important?

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 43, Issue 24, Page 12,407-12,414, 28 December 2016., 2016
Abstract To determine the importance of receiver fault geometry in Coulomb stress calculations a new methodology is presented to model faults with variable geometry. Although most models use planar faults, it is known that these are inaccurate representations of faults observed in the field. The central Italian Apennines are chosen as a straightforward

Microstructural controls on the physical and mechanical properties of edifice‐forming andesites at Volcán de Colima, Mexico

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 119, Issue 4, Page 2925-2963, April 2014., 2014
Abstract The reliable assessment of volcanic unrest must rest on an understanding of the rocks that form the edifice. It is their microstructure that dictates their physical properties and mechanical behavior and thus the response of the edifice to stress perturbations during unrest.

Release site manipulation to favour European ground squirrel Spermophilus citellus translocations: translocation and habitat manipulation

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 18, Issue 1, Page 97-104, March 2012., 2012
Translocating European ground squirrels Spermophilus citellus has become a popular conservation tool. However, few release techniques have been carefully evaluated. To contribute to an evidence‐based ground squirrel translocation guide for wildlife managers, we evaluated conditions of habitat manipulation (grass height and artificial burrow entrance ...
