A total of 584 adult nematomorphs, Gordius difficilis, was collected from 2 man-made ponds and their overflow stream in southeastern Wisconsin. Ponds were surveyed throughout the year, but all free-living worms were found during July-August of 1996, July-September of 1997, and June-August of 1998.

The eggs, preparasitic larvae, and certain adult characters of Neochordodes occidentalis (Montg.) (Chordodidae: Gordioidea) are newly described. The method of penetration of preparasitic hairworms into larvae of Culex pipiens L. was examined. The parasites bored directly through the peritrophic membrane and epithelial gut cells to reach the host's body

A total of 282 short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididae) was collected in a mountainous area of New Zealand's South Island and examined for hairworm (Nematomorpha) infections. Thirteen percent of female Sigaus obelisci and 3% of female S. australis harbored hairworms; males of both species, as well as male and female S. campestris, were all uninfected. All

To examine how aggregation by hairworms may enhance survival in freshwater, we determined water balance characteristics of Paragordius varius in groups of different sizes. P. varius is hyperosmotic resulting in high body water content and functions down to one-half of water stores.

A new species of hairworm, Parachordodes tegonotus n. sp. (Gordioidea: Nematomorpha) is described from three species of ground beetles (Carabidae: Coleoptera) from the state of Oregon. This is the first record of Parachordodes Camerano parasitising carabid beetles in North America.

The ultrastructure of mitochondria in the flattened circomyarian fibers of the horsehair worm Gordionus alpestris (Nemathelminthes) was examined. In contrast to the previously published data, we showed these mitochondria to be giant elongated organelles that densely fill the central cytoplasmic space of the ribbon-like muscle fibers.

Hairworm (Nematomorpha: Gordioidea) parasites of New Zealand wetas (Orthoptera: Stenopelmatidae)
Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1991The New Zealand hairworms (Nematomorpha: Gordioidea) Gordius dimorphus n.sp., Euchordodes nigromaculatus n.sp., and Gordionus diblastus (Örley) are described or redescribed as parasites of the stenopelmatid (Orthoptera) genera Deinacrida, Hemiandrus, Zealandosandrus, and Hemideina. Hairworm larvae are described from aquatic insect paratenic hosts.

Observations on the Free-Living Adult Stage of Gordius dimorphus (Nematomorpha: Gordioidea)
The Journal of Parasitology, 1996A total of 119 adult hairworms, Gordius dimorphus, was collected on 2 occasions from a small mountain stream in New Zealand's South Island. Size dimorphism between male and female worms was much greater than previously reported. The average sizes of worms of either sex found in mixed-sex groups were no different from those of worms occurring either ...
