Summary After centuries of trubled history, in 1869 the Island of Gorgona (Tuscan Archipelago, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) became a rural penal colony and, as a consequence, of difficult access. At present, with its prison, the island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, created in 1996, the largest marine park in Europe.
