The evidence base for ranger patrol effectiveness in conservation and how to improve it

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2172-2189, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Ranger patrols are a cornerstone of wildlife protection efforts around the world and occur across all ecological governance systems. Evidence that patrols reduce threats to wildlife and enable their recovery has not been systematically examined previously.

Utterance evolution: the road to generative, combinatorial communicators

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2427-2447, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Language has long been considered uniquely complex in the animal kingdom; however, animal research over the last decade has begun to challenge some long‐standing premises about exactly which language capacities are uniquely human. The task of resolving why and how complex communication systems evolve, particularly human language, has ...

Sociability Under Anthropogenic Change: From Individual Behaviour to Population‐Level Consequences

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
Our review synthesises empirical and theoretical research on how anthropogenic environmental change reshapes animal social behaviour from individuals to populations. We use sociability as an individual‐level lens, distinguishing context‐dependent expression from repeatable interindividual differences and linking both to social relationships, network ...

Stronger Together: Isograft Fusion Accelerates Recovery and May Facilitate Heat‐Evolved Symbiont Transmission in Bleached Adult Corals

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 5, October 2026.
This study investigates whether tissue fusion between adult corals enables transmission of heat‐evolved (HE) symbionts. After ~50 days of fusion to a donor, HE symbionts were detected in chemically bleached Galaxea fascicularis recipients. Fusion also accelerated post‐bleaching recovery.
