Molecular investigation of the phylogenetic placement of Kartalinia and a revision of Bituminaria (Fabaceae: Psoraleeae)

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 4, August 2026.
Abstract The genus Kartalinia was described to accommodate a single, obscure species, Psoralea acaulis, based on its unique morphology and karyology. No concerted molecular phylogenetic studies were available for this species at the time, and therefore its phylogenetic position was uncertain.

Can We Generalize About the Mortality Features of the 1918‐19 Influenza Pandemic? An Examination of a Small‐Scale and Isolated British Columbian Population

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Human Biology, Volume 38, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Objectives In this paper we use the small‐scale population of the Fort George area (located in the central interior of British Columbia, Canada) to test the applicability of the three signature mortality features of the 1918/19 influenza pandemic: mortality rates higher than those in preceding influenza epidemics except for the elderly ...

Analysis of plant and environmental samples for the quarantine fungus Phyllosticta citricarpa in four European citrus‐growing areas

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 188, Issue 3, Page 996-1012, May 2026.
Methodologies for the early detection of Phyllosticta citricarpa in air and rainwater samples were developed and applied over three consecutive years (2018–2021) in four European citrus sites, previously reported to harbour the pathogen. Phyllosticta citricarpa was not detected in plant, air, or rainwater samples, and no CBS symptoms were observed on ...

Efficacy of Sequential Hepatic Vein Embolization Following Portal Vein Embolization in Promoting Regeneration of Liver Volume and Function Before Right‐Sided Major Hepatectomy

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, Volume 10, Issue 1, Page 229-240, January 2026.
Sequential hepatic vein embolization (HVE) following portal vein embolization (PVE) significantly improves both the volume and function of the future remnant liver (FRL) compared to PVE alone. In this study, the FRL regeneration rates for volume and function were markedly higher and faster in the PVE–HVE group, with no differences in surgical outcomes ...

Understanding the influence of Malta litho‐structural features on the dynamics of nitrate transport in the vadose zone

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal, Volume 24, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Abstract Coastal aquifers in the Mediterranean are increasingly stressed by climate change, intensive agriculture, and rising water demand. In Malta island, where groundwater is a key resource, nitrate contamination remains a persistent issue despite regulatory efforts and the designation of the islands as a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone.

Across the Channel and Through Time: Did Lesser Horseshoe Bats Colonise Pantelleria From Europe or North Africa?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
We investigated the biogeographic origin of the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) on Pantelleria Island, a key Mediterranean crossroads. Using mitochondrial DNA, divergence dating and palaeogeographical reconstruction, we found that Pantelleria bats share a recent evolutionary history with Malta and North African lineages, distinct from ...
