GPGPU for industrial control systems
2013 IEEE 18th Conference on Emerging Technologies & Factory Automation (ETFA), 2013In this work in progress paper we present parts of our ongoing work on using the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) in the context of Embedded Systems. As a first step we are investigating the possibility to move functions from a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to a GPU. If it is possible to make such a migration then it would simplify the hardware designs

The case for GPGPU spatial multitasking
IEEE International Symposium on High-Performance Comp Architecture, 2012The set-top and portable device market continues to grow, as does the demand for more performance under increasing cost, power, and thermal constraints. The integration of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) into these devices and the emergence of general-purpose computations on graphics hardware enable a new set of highly parallel applications.

A Taxonomy of GPGPU Performance Scaling
2015 IEEE International Symposium on Workload Characterization, 2015Graphics processing units (GPUs) range from small, embedded designs to large, high-powered discrete cards. While the performance of graphics workloads is generally understood, there has been little study of the performance of GPGPU applications across a variety of hardware configurations.

Current data centers leverage virtual machines (VMs) in order to efficiently use hardware resources. VMs allow reducing equipment acquisition costs as well as decreasing overall energy consumption. However, although VMs have noticeably evolved to make a smart use of the underlying hardware, the use of GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) for General ...

Accelerating atomic operations on GPGPUs
2013 Seventh IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Networks-on-Chip (NoCS), 2013General purpose computing on GPUs (GPGPU) has experienced rapid growth over the last several years as new application realms are explored and traditional highly parallel algorithms are adapted to this computational substrate. However, a large portion of the parallel workload space, both in emerging and traditional domains, remains ill-suited for GPGPU ...

Parallel cloth simulation with GPGPU
Multimedia Tools and Applications, 2018In a 3D simulation, numerous physically and numerically related calculations are required to represent an object realistically. The existing CPU (central processing unit) technology, however, is incapable of handling such a large computational amount in real time.

GPGPUs ECC efficiency and efficacy
2014 IEEE International Symposium on Defect and Fault Tolerance in VLSI and Nanotechnology Systems (DFT), 2014In this paper we assess and discuss the efficiency and overhead of the Error-Correcting Code (ECC) mechanism available on modern GPGPUs, which are increasingly used for both High Performance Computing and safety-critical applications. Both the resilience to radiation-induced silent data corruption and functional interruption are experimentally and ...

Unstructured Control Flow in GPGPU
2013 IEEE International Symposium on Parallel & Distributed Processing, Workshops and Phd Forum, 2013The current trend toward heterogeneous architectures motivates us to reconsider current software and hardware paradigms. The focus is centered around new parallel programming models, compiler design, and runtime resource management techniques to exploit the features of many-core processor architectures.

FlexGrip: A soft GPGPU for FPGAs
2013 International Conference on Field-Programmable Technology (FPT), 2013Over the past decade, soft microprocessors and vector processors have been extensively used in FPGAs for a wide variety of applications. However, it is difficult to straightforwardly extend their functionality to support conditional and thread-based execution characteristic of general-purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs) without recompiling FPGA ...
