Autonomous AI‐Driven Design for Skin Product Formulations

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
This review presents a comprehensive closed‐loop framework for autonomous skin product formulation design. By integrating artificial intelligence‐driven experiment selection with automated multi‐tiered assays, the approach shifts development from trial‐and‐error to intelligent optimisation.

Visual Tracking of a GPS Target within a FieldLab [PDF]

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2014
AbstractThe monitoring and videoing of a user's movement within a “FieldLab” recreational facility is required to study the effectiveness of innovative equipment designed to increase physical activity.A low cost alternative to current tracking systems based around the Global positioning system (GPS) was trialed for use within the Sheffield FieldLab ...

Lidar‐Based Object Tracking of Traffic Participants with Sensor Nodes in Existing Urban Infrastructure

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper presents a lidar‐based sensor node design and a rule‐based state observer for edge‐based traffic participant tracking. Unlike other state‐of‐the‐art methods, this state observer enables real‐time, CPU‐only edge processing without relying on machine learning approaches.

Human‐in‐the‐Loop Swarms: A Bionic Swarm Approach to Real‐World Soil Mapping

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article introduces the “Bionic Swarm,” a novel system that lowers the barriers to real‐world swarm validation by abstracting difficult hardware tasks to app‐guided human agents. We demonstrate the system's utility through the experimental validation of a geotechnical soil‐mapping swarm algorithm and show superior performance to baseline approaches

Estimating Position from Millisecond Samples of GPS Signals (the “FastFix” Algorithm)

open access: yesSensors, 2020
A new approach to GPS positioning is described in which the post-processing of ultra-short sequences of captured GPS signal data can produce an estimate of receiver location.

Asymmetric Whisker‐Inspired Sensor Pairs for Enhanced Airflow Sensing on Drones

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work incorporates asymmetric cross‐sections into a whisker‐inspired sensor pair to enhance airflow sensing. By comparing signals between two offset asymmetric whiskers, the system improves flow heading estimation and identifies the presence of fan‐generated wind during quadrotor flight.

Playing in the Dark: Invisible Chess as a Laboratory for Strategic AI

open access: yesAI &Innovation, EarlyView.
This paper shows that strategic AI evaluated on perfect‐information benchmarks can be brittle in real adversarial settings. By using invisible chess as a benchmark for hidden state and deception, it argues for stricter testing, human oversight, and more cautious governance of high‐stakes AI systems.
