Human‐in‐the‐Loop Swarms: A Bionic Swarm Approach to Real‐World Soil Mapping

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article introduces the “Bionic Swarm,” a novel system that lowers the barriers to real‐world swarm validation by abstracting difficult hardware tasks to app‐guided human agents. We demonstrate the system's utility through the experimental validation of a geotechnical soil‐mapping swarm algorithm and show superior performance to baseline approaches

Impact of tracking loop settings of the Swarm GPS receiver on gravity field recovery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The Swarm mission consists of three identical satellites equipped with GPS receivers and orbiting in near-polar low Earth orbits. Thus, they can be used to determine the Earth’s gravity field by means of high-low satellite-to-satellite tracking (hl-SST).

High‐elevation endemic plants predicted to lose habitat from changing climate in Washington State

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise High‐elevation plants face unique challenges from potential climate change impacts that will likely require upslope migration into increasingly smaller suitable habitat. This situation is particularly acute for endemic species that by definition occupy small geographic ranges.

Tracking the built status of MEP works: Assessing the value of a Scan-vs-BIM system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) works constitute a large portion of construction costs and thus need to be appropriately tracked. Assessment of the built status of MEP works in construction projects is however typically limited to ...

Assessing the Feasibility of Wearable Devices for Physiological Monitoring and Heat Risk Prediction in Outdoor Agricultural Workers

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Industrial Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Outdoor agricultural workers experience significant heat exposure, yet few studies have evaluated whether wearable sensors can reliably measure continuous physiological responses in real field conditions. This pilot study examined the feasibility and predictive utility of core temperature, hydration, heart rate, and movement data ...

Miniaturized Conductometric Biosensor for Rapid Detection of TNF‐α in Saliva

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
A miniaturized conductometric sensor detects TNF‐α at femtomolar levels with high selectivity. The device enables noninvasive testing using pooled human saliva and supports smartphone‐based, real‐time resistance readings. This portable biosensor offers a practical alternative for monitoring TNF‐α, providing new opportunities for diabetes and related ...

Tracking homing pigeons by GPS

open access: yes, 2005
The present thesis utilises recently developed miniature GPS loggers to track homing pigeons (Columba livia) navigating within their familiar area. This technology allows tracks of extremely high spatial and temporal resolution to be recorded providing a unique opportunity for novel data analysis. The thesis focuses on the development of pigeons' tracks

Modeling Ionospheric Scintillation and its Effects on GPS Carrier Tracking Loops and Two Other Applications of Modeling and Estimation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Four papers are presented that introduce several applications of modeling and estimation with emphasis on the Global Positioning System (GPS). The main thrust of this work, contained in the first two papers, concerns modeling ionosphere-induced
