Synthesized GPS trajectories in downtown Manhattan road network in New York City
Four different combinations of noise level and sampling interval are considered in the data generation. Each combination consists of either low noise (25 meters) or high noise (50 meters) with short intervals (20 seconds) or long intervals (40 seconds ...

Wind, waves, wing loading and the flight energetics of giant petrels
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Wind is a major factor driving seabird movement and energetics, the effects of which are modulated by morphology. Developments in tagging technology now make it possible to test predictions from aerodynamic theory about the effects of wind on flight performance in free ...

Offshore wind farm avoidance by a discard‐feeding seabird is independent of local fishing activity
Fishing is not allowed within wind farms; therefore, discard‐feeding seabirds may appear to avoid wind farm areas. We found that most Lesser Black‐backed Gulls avoided the wind farm area, but not each individual in each period. Avoidance of the wind farm was not driven by fishing exclusion within its perimeter.

Social organization and habitat use shape the gut microbiome of a marine fish
This study provides the first evidence linking habitat use—and to a lesser extent social organization—to gut microbiome composition in a wild marine fish. The results indicate that local habitat conditions are the primary driver of microbial variation, while social effects are detectable but weak.

Using nationwide data from over 92,000 individuals, we reveal large‐scale spatio‐temporal variation in age‐dependent survival and age at first breeding in a long‐lived species. By comparing alternative spatial models, we show that demographic variation follows a biologically meaningful spatial structure, with implications for population dynamics ...

Analysis and improvement of map-matching methods for GPS trajectories in urban environments

Rapid hormonal rise in honey bees due to heat‐shock is mitigated by a primer pheromone
We show that honey bee foragers increased juvenile hormone (JH) titers significantly after heat‐shocked for 1 h at 40 °C, but this increase is dependent on social conditions. Increase of JH titers only happened when bees were isolated (one worker bee per vial) but not in groups.

Abstract Extensive research has established a link between low self‐control and child victimization. However, the specific neighborhood conditions under which low self‐control most strongly influences victimization have been little examined, and, more importantly, no previous studies have investigated the complex ways in which neighborhood context ...
