Fracture in distortion gradient plasticity [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
In this work, distortion gradient plasticity is used to gain insight into material deformation ahead of a crack tip. This also constitutes the first fracture mechanics analysis of gradient plasticity theories adopting Nye's tensor as primal kinematic variable. First, the asymptotic nature of crack tip fields is analytically investigated.

Stress-gradient plasticity. [PDF]

open access: yesProc Natl Acad Sci U S A, 2011
A new model, stress-gradient plasticity, is presented that provides unique mechanistic insight into size-dependent phenomena in plasticity. This dislocation-based model predicts strengthening of materials when a gradient in stress acts over dislocation source–obstacle configurations.

Localization Analysis of an Energy-Based Fourth-Order Gradient Plasticity Model [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Mechanics - A/Solids, 55, pp. 256--277, 2016, 2015
The purpose of this paper is to provide analytical and numerical solutions of the formation and evolution of the localized plastic zone in a uniaxially loaded bar with variable cross-sectional area.

Strain gradient plasticity: energetic or dissipative? [PDF]

open access: yesActa Mechanica Sinica, 2015
It has been established by computation, and confirmed by analysis, for an infinite slab of strain-gradient sensitive material subjected to plane-strain tensile loading, that passivation of the lateral boundaries at some stage of loading inhibits plastic ...

On fracture in finite strain gradient plasticity [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Plasticity, 2016
In this work a general framework for damage and fracture assessment including the effect of strain gradients is provided. Both mechanism-based and phenomenological strain gradient plasticity (SGP) theories are implemented numerically using finite deformation theory and crack tip fields are investigated.

Gradient plasticity in gradient nano-grained metals [PDF]

open access: yesExtreme Mechanics Letters, 2016
Gradient nano-grained (GNG) metals are a unique class of materials with spatial gradients in grain size, typically from the surface to the bulk. Here the gradient mechanical behavior in GNG copper is studied by a crystal plasticity finite element model that accounts for grain-size-dependent yield strengths.

HOMOGENIZATION IN GRADIENT PLASTICITY [PDF]

open access: yesMathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, 2011
This paper yields a two-scale homogenization result for a rate-independent elasto-plastic system. The presented model is a generalization of the classical model of linearized elasto-plasticity with hardening, which is extended by a gradient term of the plastic variables.

Dislocation plasticity in thin metal films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This article describes the current level of understanding of dislocation plasticity in thin films and small structures in which the film or structure dimension plays an important role. Experimental observations of the deformation behavior of thin films,
