Triple Junctions as Dislocation‐Like Defects: The Role of Grain Boundary Crystallography Revealed by Experiment and Atomistic Simulation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Grain boundary triple junctions are an essential ingredient of the microstructure of polycrystalline materials. In this study, a triple junction is observed using atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and characterized. Computer simulations reveal that the junction has a dislocation character that is determined by the joining ...

Plasticity of Bi2Te3-family thermoelectric crystals

open access: yesNature Communications
The exceptional plasticity discovered most recently in defective Bi2Te3 bulk crystal inspires the great interest on investigating the plasticity of other Bi2Te3-family bulk crystals. In this work, Bi2Se3, Sb2Te3, and their solid solutions with Bi2Te3 are

Microstructure, Thermal Transport, and Dry‐Sliding Tribology of Powder‐Metallurgy Al7075 Composites Reinforced With Sol–Gel‐Derived ZnO–rGO Hybrid Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Sol–gel‐derived ZnO–rGO hybrid nanoparticles enable Al7075 powder‐metallurgy composites to achieve concurrent gains in hardness and thermal conductivity while markedly lowering friction and wear. The hybrid architecture couples ZnO‐based load support with rGO‐assisted lamellar sliding and heat spreading, revealing a promising route toward lightweight ...

Some remarks on standard gradient models and gradient plasticity

open access: yesMathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2014
The standard gradient models, originally introduced in the works of Gurtin ( Physica D 1996; 92: 178) and Frémond and Nedjar ( Int J Solids Struct 1996; 33: 1083) have been studied intensively in the last few decades for various applications in plasticity, damage mechanics and multi-phase analysis.

Design and Analysis of Compression–Torsion Coupling Metamaterials Using the Golden Section Method

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel compression–torsion metamaterial is engineered using inclined rods and symmetry breaking. To optimize its torsional performance, the golden section method is employed. The mechanical response of the metamaterial is validated through both numerical analysis and experimental validation.

Indentation model and strain gradient plasticity law for glassy polymers

open access: yes, 1999
Plastic deformation of metals is generally a function of the strain. Recently, both phenomenological and dislocation-based strain gradient plasticity laws were proposed after strain gradients were experimentally found to affect the plastic deformation of

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

The genetics of thermal plasticity in Plantago lanceolata [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Phenotypic plasticity, an individual’s phenotypic response to environmental change, is a fundamental characteristic of all life on earth that plays a central role in adaptation, phenotypic differentiation, and speciation. Temperature-sensitive phenotypic

Reinforcement learning in populations of spiking neurons

open access: yes, 2008
Population coding is widely regarded as a key mechanism for achieving reliable behavioral responses in the face of neuronal variability. But in standard reinforcement learning a flip-side becomes apparent.
