Bounds on the elastic threshold for problems of dissipative strain-gradient plasticity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
This work is concerned with the purely dissipative version of a well-established model of rate-independent strain-gradient plasticity. In the conventional theory of plasticity the approach to determining plastic flow is local, and based on the stress distribution in the body. For the dissipative problem of strain-gradient plasticity such an approach is

Combining transient dynamics and logistic‐asymptotic growth to study the recovery of two seabird populations after rat eradication

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century.

Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

Plasticity and non-Schmid effects [PDF]

open access: yesProc. R. Soc. A. 2014 470 20130440, 2013
The structure of the overall response of a metal polycrystal is analyzed under the assumption that activity on the slip systems of its constituents is governed by a generalized Schmid law. In the resulting macro-model of metal plasticity the overall rate of plastic deformation is related to the stress-gradient of the yield surface via a generalized ...

Dendritic cells steering antigen and leukocyte traffic in lymph nodes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Dendritic cells are key players in the activation of T cells and their commitment to effector function. In this In a Nutshell Review, we will discuss how dendritic cells guide the trafficking of antigen and leukocytes in the lymph node, thus influencing T‐cell activation processes. Dendritic cells (DCs) play a central role in initiating and shaping the

PLASTIC: Improving Input and Label Plasticity for Sample Efficient Reinforcement Learning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In Reinforcement Learning (RL), enhancing sample efficiency is crucial, particularly in scenarios when data acquisition is costly and risky. In principle, off-policy RL algorithms can improve sample efficiency by allowing multiple updates per environment interaction.

Gradient nanostructured steel with superior tensile plasticity

open access: yesScience Advances, 2023
Nanostructured metallic materials with abundant high-angle grain boundaries exhibit high strength and good radiation resistance. While the nanoscale grains induce high strength, they also degrade tensile ductility. We show that a gradient nanostructured ferritic steel exhibits simultaneous improvement in yield strength by 36% and uniform elongation by ...

The power of microRNA regulation—insights into immunity and metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
MicroRNAs are emerging as crucial regulators at the intersection of metabolism and immunity. This review examines how miRNAs coordinate glucose and lipid metabolism while simultaneously modulating T‐cell development and immune responses. Moreover, it highlights how cutting‐edge artificial intelligence applications can identify miRNA biomarkers ...

Multi-field modelling and simulation of large deformation ductile fracture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In the present contribution we focus on a phase-field approach to ductile fracture applied to large deformation contact problems. Phase-field approaches to fracture allow for an efficient numerical investigation of complex three-dimensional fracture problems,
