Strengthening a Medium-Carbon Low-Alloy Steel by Nanosized Grains: The Role of Asymmetrical Rolling

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2023
A medium-carbon low-alloy steel was prepared via the asymmetric rolling process with different ratios of upper and down roll velocities. Subsequently, the microstructure and mechanical properties were explored by using SEM, EBSD, TEM, tensile tests and ...

Exploiting the structure via sketched gradient algorithms [PDF]

open access: yes2017 IEEE Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing (GlobalSIP), 2017
Sketched gradient algorithms have been recently introduced for efficiently solving the large-scale constrained Least-squares regressions. In this paper we provide novel convergence analysis for the basic method {\it Gradient Projection Classical Sketch} (GPCS) to reveal the fast linear convergence rate of GPCS towards a vicinity of the solution thanks ...

Finite element simulation of thermodynamic properties of NiCoCrAlY/YSZ gradient coating

open access: yesJournal of Aeronautical Materials, 2023
The two-dimensional finite element microscopic model of NiCoCrAlY/YSZ gradient thermal barrier coating was established by using the representative volume element method to calculate the thermophysical properties of the gradient layer under different ...

On gradient structures for Markov chains and the passage to Wasserstein gradient flows

open access: yesNetworks and Heterogeneous Media, 2015
We study the approximation of Wasserstein gradient structures by their finite-dimensional analog. We show that simple finite-volume discretizations of the linear Fokker-Planck equation exhibit the recently established entropic gradient-flow structure for reversible Markov chains.

Second Gradient Models and Concrete Structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Damage induces strain localization in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete. In order to correctly simulate this behaviour, it is necessary to introduce a length scale parameter in the continuum model. The second gradient model, a special case of kinematically enriched continua, uses an internal length parameter by taking into account the second ...

A Conjugate Gradient Method for Electronic Structure Calculations [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 2017
In this paper, we study a conjugate gradient method for electronic structure calculations. We propose a Hessian based step size strategy, which together with three orthogonality approaches yields three algorithms for computing the ground state energy of atomic and molecular systems.

Three-Dimensional Gradient Metamaterial Devices Coupled with Phononic Crystals for Acoustic Enhancement Sensing

open access: yesCrystals, 2023
Conventional acoustic systems exhibit a difficulty in sensing weak acoustic fault signals in complex mechanical vibration environments. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an acoustic sensing mode and a corresponding functional device with pressure ...

Concentration effects of BV gradients have gradient structure

open access: yes, 2021
We prove that the concentration effects arising from weakly-* convergent sequences of gradients of maps of bounded variation have gradient structure. This is in stark contrast with the corresponding oscillation phenomena.

Gradients of structure-function tethering across neocortex [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2019
The white matter architecture of brain networks imparts a distinct signature on neuronal co-activation patterns. Inter-regional projections promote synchrony among distant neuronal populations, giving rise to richly patterned functional networks. A variety of statistical, communication and biophysical models have been proposed to study the relationship

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.
