Mesoscale structural gradients in human tooth enamel

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2022
The outstanding mechanical and chemical properties of dental enamel emerge from its complex hierarchical architecture. An accurate, detailed multiscale model of the structure and composition of enamel is important for understanding lesion formation in tooth decay (dental caries), enamel development (amelogenesis) and associated pathologies

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Modeling of extra strengthening in gradient nanotwinned metals based on molecular dynamics

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2022
Gradient nanotwinned metals exhibit extra strengthening and work hardening behaviors, which have enormous potential for engineering applications. In this study, molecular dynamics method is performed for analyzing the effects of nanotwinned structure ...

Optimising continuous microstructures: a comparison of gradient-based and stochastic methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This work compares the use of a deterministic gradient based search with a stochastic genetic algorithm to optimise the geometry of a space frame structure.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of AA2024 Aluminum Alloy with Multimodal Gradient Structures

open access: yesMetals
Enhancing the strength and toughness of aluminum alloys using microstructure optimization remains a key challenge. In this study, an AA2024 aluminum alloy with a double-layer multi-gradient structure was fabricated using 50% constrained deformation and ...

Optimization of synchronization in gradient clustered networks

open access: yes, 2007
We consider complex clustered networks with a gradient structure, where sizes of the clusters are distributed unevenly. Such networks describe more closely actual networks in biophysical systems and in technological applications than previous models ...

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Macroscopic limit of the Becker-D\"oring equation via gradient flows

open access: yes, 2018
This work considers gradient structures for the Becker-D\"oring equation and its macroscopic limits. The result of Niethammer [17] is extended to prove the convergence not only for solutions of the Becker-D\"oring equation towards the Lifshitz-Slyozov ...
