Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Destruction of Interstellar Dust in Evolving Supernova Remnant Shock Waves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Supernova generated shock waves are responsible for most of the destruction of dust grains in the interstellar medium (ISM). Calculations of the dust destruction timescale have so far been carried out using plane parallel steady shocks, however that ...

Grain Filling Mechanisms in Spring Wheat. I. Grain filling phases according to the development of plant organs.

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Crop Science, 1993
To define the growth phases for analyzing the physiological and morphological mechanisms of grain filling in a spring wheat canopy, the dry weight of the grains and the water soluble sugar content (WSC) and structural weight of the culm were measured for the variety Haruyutaka everyday during the grain-filling period.

Phloem transport of arsenic species from flag leaf to grain during grain filling [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2011
• Strategies to reduce arsenic (As) in rice grain, below concentrations that represent a serious human health concern, require that the mechanisms of As accumulation within grain be established. Therefore, retranslocation of As species from flag leaves into filling rice grain was investigated.

Four‐Point Bending Tests at High Temperatures on Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks with and Without Recyclate Considering Different Carbon Contents

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

The Effect of Two Irrigation Regimes on Yield and Water Use Efficiency of Rice Varieties in Eastern China

open access: yesAgronomy
The way in which alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD), as a water-saving practice promoted in rice (Oryza sativa L.) production systems, could enhance the productivity and water use efficiency (WUE) attracts broad attention.

The Effect of Plastic-Covered Ridge and Furrow Planting on the Grain Filling and Hormonal Changes of Winter Wheat

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture, 2013
Although plastic-covered ridge and furrow planting (RF) has been reported to produce substantial increases in the grain weight of winter wheat, the underlying mechanism is not yet understood.

Measurements of thermal properties of icy Mars regolith analogs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In a series of laboratory experiments, we measure thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity of icy regolith created by vapor deposition of water below its triple point and in a low pressure atmosphere.

Population of Nonmetallic Inclusions in Liquid High‐Silicon Electrical Steel in Contact With MgO–C Refractories Based on Recyclates and Environmentally Friendly Binders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The formation of nonmetallic inclusions (NMIs) was investigated in this study, carrying out immersion tests for 30 min at a temperature of 1600°C with liquid high‐silicon electrical steel (Si ≈ 3 mass‐%) and different MgO–C refractories. Conventional MgO–C refractories were considered, as well as MgO–C refractories containing MgO–C recyclate and ...

Profiling the differentially expressed genes in two rice varieties during rapid grain-filling stages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Grain filling is an important agronomic trait, which directly affects the final yield of rice. Partially filled and empty rice grains are among the factors that limit the yield of MR219, one of the highest yielding rice varieties in Malaysia.
