We report the in situ investigation of grain growth and grain boundary migration, performed with a variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) on a polycrystalline gold film. Atomic step resolution allowed us to identify the individual grains and, thus, also the grain boundaries.

On the Grain Growth Kinetics of a Low Density Steel
The grain growth kinetics of an age-hardenable Fe-Mn-Al-C steel were investigated. Kinetics of grain growth were determined between 1173 and 1348 K (900−1075 °C) to obtain a range of grain sizes from 30 to 475 μm.

A kinetic model for grain growth
We provide a well-posedness analysis of a kinetic model for grain growth introduced by Fradkov which is based on the von Neumann-Mullins law. The model consists of an infinite number of transport equations with a tri-diagonal coupling modelling topological changes in the grain configuration.

Grain growth and grain translation in crystals [PDF]
Grain growth is generally driven to minimize the overall grain boundary energy. However, for low-angle grain boundaries the requirement that lattice planes be continuous across the boundary gives rise to a coupling between the normal motion of the grain boundary and the tangential motion of the lattice.

Experimental and Numerical Simulations of the Solidification Process in Continuous Casting of Slab
Thermal simulation equipment (TSE) was recently developed to simulate the solidification process in the industrial continuous casting of slab. The grain growth, solid-liquid interface movement, and columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) in the continuous ...

Characterization of metals in four dimensions
The ability to watch the three-dimensional (3D) evolution of structural materials is a breakthrough in non-destructive characterization. In particular, X-ray tomographic imaging techniques have found success in revealing the underlying mechanisms of ...
