A Simulative Approach for the Prediction of Mesoscale Residual Stress Fields in Solution‐Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a 3D representative volume element‐based simulation approach to predict mesoscopic residual stress and strain fields in silicon solid solution‐strengthened ductile cast iron. By modeling phase transformation kinetics with an enhanced Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov model, the effects of varying cooling rates on residual stresses are ...

Role of bimodal-grained structure with random texture on mechanical and corrosion properties of a Mg-Zn-Nd alloy

open access: yesJournal of Magnesium and Alloys, 2022
Fine grained ZN20 alloy was obtained by combining equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with extrusion. Microstructural observation showed an obvious grain refinement with an average grain size of 10 µm after ECAP.

Effect of Casting Temperature on Grain Size of Al-Si Alloys Refined by a Novel Grain Refiner

open access: yesMaterials Science Forum, 2014
The automotive industry is willing of employing a greater amount of light metals like aluminium, magnesium and titanium, in order to reduce the total weight of the cars and, consequently, fuel consumption. Even though some casting aluminium alloys are commonly employed for automotive structural applications, their mechanical performances can be ...

Mechanical Behavior and Microstructural Changes Associated with Tensile Deformation above the Martensite Start Temperature during Quenching and Subsequent Partitioning of a Low‐Alloy 37SiB6 Steel

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A new experimental setup, incorporating digital image correlation and infrared thermography in combination with inductive‐conductive heating for precise temperature control, is used to analyze the mechanical behavior and microstructural changes of sheet metal under complex thermomechanical test conditions that represent quench and partitioning ...

Development of Aluminum Scandium Alloys for Hydrogen Storage Valves

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Different aluminum alloy series and various aluminum‐scandium alloys with differing Sc and Zr levels are evaluated for use in hydrogen storage valve production. The alloys undergo hardness testing, optical microscopy, and tensile strength analysis, with hardening behavior studied under varying conditions.

Grain refinement of AZ31 magnesium alloy by electromagnetic stirring under effect of grain-refiner

open access: yesBulletin of Materials Science, 2012
The effects of electromagnetic stirring and Al4C3 grain refiner on the grain refinement of semi-continuously cast AZ31 magnesium alloy were discussed in this investigation. The results indicate that electromagnetic stirring has an effective refining effect on the grain size of AZ31 magnesium alloy under the effect of Al4C3 grain refiner ...

Residual Stress States in Microstructurally Graded PBF–LB/M Austenitic Steel Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines microstructurally graded 316L rectangular tube profiles fabricated via PBF–LB/M using a dual‐laser system. A 1 kW top‐hat and a 400 W Gaussian laser create distinct grain sizes and crystallographic texture. Mechanical properties are linked to microstructural evolution driven by processing conditions.

Effect of grain refinement on enhancing critical current density and upper critical field in undoped MgB2 ex-situ tapes

open access: yes, 2008
Ex-situ Powder-In-Tube MgB2 tapes prepared with ball-milled, undoped powders showed a strong enhancement of the irreversibility field H*, the upper critical field Hc2 and the critical current density Jc(H) together with the suppression of the anisotropy ...
