Measuring grain rotation at the nanoscale [PDF]
ABSTRACTIn this paper, we introduced a method to measure grain rotation of nanomaterials under external stress using a high pressure diamond anvil cell and the Laue microdiffraction technique at a synchrotron facility. We used tungsten carbide marker crystals to investigate grain rotation activities of 3 and 500 nm nickel media.

An energy approach to predict electromigration induced grain rotation under high current density
An energy approach is proposed to describe the electromigration induced grain rotation under high current density. The driving force is assumed to arise from the grain-boundary energy reduction and increase of the inner energy from the joule heating ...

Reversal in the Size Dependence of Grain Rotation [PDF]
The conventional belief, based on the Read-Shockley model for the grain rotation mechanism, has been that smaller grains rotate more under stress due to the motion of grain boundary dislocations. However, in our high-pressure synchrotron Laue x-ray microdiffraction experiments, 70 nm nickel particles are found to rotate more than any other grain size ...

Grain Rotation as a Mechanism of Grain Growth in Nanocrystalline Materials [PDF]
Grain-boundary (GB) properties in a polycrystalline system are generally anisotropic; in particular, both the GB energy and mobility depend on the GB misorientation. Moreover, in nanocrystalline materials, in which the grain size is less than 100 nm, grain rotations leading to the coalescence of neighboring grains via elimination of the common GB ...

ROTATION OF GRAINS OF METAL TIPS (ANNIHILATION OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES)
Experiments in a scanning electron microscope are described which enable in situ studies of the morphological evolution of metal tips (Au). The existence of a rotation of the grains of a polycrystalline tip, which leads to an annihilation of grain boundaries, is directly visualized, measured and interpreted.

Disorientation of Suprathermally Rotating Grains and the Grain Alignment Problem [PDF]
We discuss the dynamics of dust grains subjected to uncompensated torques arising from H_2 formation. In particular, we discuss grain dynamics when a grain spins down and goes through a ``crossover''. As first pointed out by Spitzer & McGlynn (1979), the grain angular momentum before and after a crossover event are correlated, and the degree of ...

Microstructural evolution and oxidation in α/β titanium alloy under fretting fatigue loading
Coupling effects of fretting wear and cyclic stress could result in significant fatigue strength degradation, thus potentially causing unanticipated catastrophic fractures. The underlying mechanism of microstructural evolutions caused by fretting wear is
