Simultaneous grain boundary migration and grain rotation

open access: yesActa Materialia, 2006
The energy of a polycrystalline network can be reduced by both grain boundary migration and grain rotation. We perform a series of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a circular grain embedded in an otherwise single-crystal matrix and monitor both the grain size and the misorientation of the two grains as a function of time.

Grain coalescence by grain rotation in nano-ceramics

Scripta Materialia, 2012
Grain rotation is an effective energy dissipating mechanism, the rate of which inversely depends on the fourth power of the grain size. The propensity of the nano-grain rotation to preserve the nano-structure in a metastable state depends on the nano-structure evolution.

Grain Rotation and Grain Boundary Selection in Thin Films

open access: yesMRS Proceedings, 1996
ABSTRACTComputer simulations of the phenomenon of grain rotation in polycrystalline <111> textured films have been carried out. These simulations provide insight into the evolution of film microstructure due to grain rotation. It is found that grain rotation diminishes with annealing time and stops almost completely when a metastable equilibrium ...

Impact of grain boundary character on grain rotation

Acta Materialia, 2014
Abstract The capillarity-driven shrinkage of isolated cylindrical grains with structurally different grain boundaries in aluminum was studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Three pairs of grains with 〈1 0 0〉 tilt and mixed tilt–twist boundaries with the misorientation angles θ0 = 5.45°, 16.26° and 22.61° were examined.

Grain boundary migration and grain rotation studied by molecular dynamics

Acta Materialia, 2012
Abstract We report on molecular dynamics simulations of an isolated cylindrical grain in copper shrinking under capillary forces. At low temperatures, the coupling between grain boundary (GB) migration and grain translation induces rotation of the grain towards higher or lower misorientation angles, depending on the initial misorientation.

Grain misorientation and grain-boundary rotation dependent mechanical properties in polycrystalline graphene

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 2013
In two-dimensional polycrystalline graphene, two angular degrees of freedom (DOF) are needed to define a general grain boundary (GB): the misorientation of two grains and the rotation of the boundary line.
