Crop Rotation and Soil Amendment Alters Sorghum Grain Quality

open access: yes, 2007
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation enhances grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] yield, but infl uence on grain quality has not been measured.

Encyclopedia of 2D β′‐In2Se3 Growth Using Chemical Vapor Deposition: The Effects of Synthesis Parameters Onto Material Quality

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A distinct semi‐confined inner‐tube chemical vapor deposition geometry enables reproducible, large‐area growth of phase‐pure 2D β′‐In2Se3 from InI + Se precursors. Engineering local vapor transport and optimizing precursor delivery and temperature–time conditions yield uniform continuous films.

Strain-induced grain boundary migration and grain rotation in polycrystalline metals: atomic-and meso-scale phase field simulations

open access: yes, 2022
The free energy of a polycrystalline metal can be reduced either by grain boundary (GB) migration or grain rotation, or by both of them. These processes take place over different spatial and time scales, which present severe challenges when developing ...

Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Direct observation of grain rotation-induced grain coalescence in two-dimensional colloidal crystals.

open access: yes, 2010
A spatially modulated laser is used to produce multiple localized thermal gradients in a colloidal sample placed above a gold surface. We use an optical microscope to observe real time dynamics of the resulting two-dimensional colloidal crystal grains ...

Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.

A comparison between legume technologies and fallow, and their effects on maize and soil traits, in two distinct environments of the West African savannah

open access: yes, 2008
Legume¿maize rotation and maize nitrogen (N)-response trials were carried out simultaneously from 1998 to 2004 in two distinct agro-ecological environments of West Africa: the humid derived savannah (Ibadan) and the drier northern Guinea savannah (Zaria).

Precipitation Simulations of the O‐Phase in Ti2AlNb Alloys Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Simulated and experimental evolution of the O‐phase volume fraction during postprocessing of a Ti‐21Al‐25Nb (at.%) alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion. With results of sensitivity to input parameters from a thorough and quantified analysis, the interfacial energy matrix/precipitate is the most relevant input parameter for the simulation of the O‐

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Effect of ozonation on microbiological and chemical traits of wheat grain

open access: yesPlant, Soil and Environment, 2016
Ozone, as a strong oxidative agent, is used to eradicate microbial, but this treatment affects also the quality of grain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ozonation of winter wheat grain harvested in different cropping and ...
