Average Grain Size of Steels

2003
This chapter reviews the EMAR application to determine the average grain size of carbon steels (Ogi et al. 1995) on the basis of the fourth-power frequency dependence of attenuation. The final results are favorably compared with the average of three-dimensional distribution from metallographic observations for various grades.

Influence of grain size and grain-size distribution on workability of granules with 3D printing

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2013
3D printing is a promising method for fabrication of scaffolds. Microporosity is one of the most important properties of scaffolds and directly influences cell attachment, differentiation, proliferation, spreading, resorption, bone ingrowth, and contact.

Impact of grain size and grain size distribution on the resistivity of metal nanocrystalline systems

Computational Materials Science, 2015
Abstract The grain size effect of the resistivity in the metal nanocrystalline systems is known to stem mainly from grain boundaries. In this letter, we propose a semi-quantum model based on transfer-matrix approach to calculate the resistivity. In accord with the above results, the impact of grain size distribution on the resistivity of 2D and 3D ...

Control of grain size in solidification

2002
This chapter focuses on a less well understood aspect of grain-structure control in solidification, namely control of grain size in the usually preferred equiaxed regime. The grains grow from the initial nucleation site or sites, and clearly show the direction of solidification.

Impact of grain size on grain growth in nanomaterials

Materials Letters, 2014
Abstract For the first time we studied the grain growth process, taking into consideration the energy and mobility of triple junction lines. The study was carried out by numerical simulation on polycrystals with the initial grain size ranging from 0.017 to 12.8 µm.

Grain-size effects in ferroelectric switching

Physical Review B, 1990
Abstract We present a model of ferroelectric switching which describes domain growth in crystals composed of a large number of relatively small grains. If the grain boundaries stop or significantly affect domain wall motion then the observed switching transients will deviate from those predicted by the infinite grain model of Ishibashi and Takagi.

Effect of grain size on grain boundary segregation

Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 1996
Abstract A simple thermodynamic calculation to assess the effect of grain size on grain boundary segregation has been performed. It is shown that in binary alloys when the bulk solute content is small, segregation increases with increasing grain size.

Interstellar grain size spectrum and circumstellar grain-grain collisions

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1982
In this paper, grain-grain collisions, which were recently suggested by Biermann and Harwit (1980) to occur in cool circumstellar envelopes and to be responsible for the interstellar grain size spectrum, are investigated. On the basis of the author's fragmentation theory, it is shown that in the result of such collisions size distributions of the typen(

Austenite Grain Size in HSLA

JOM, 1987
This paper attempts to find a suitable technique for determining prior austenite grain size in mild steel such that it could be used over as wide a range of compositions and temperatures as possible. An effort is also made to trace the reasons behind the failure of any particular technique when applied beyond a specific temperature and composition ...
