Influence of grain growth on the thermal structure of protoplanetary discs

open access: yes, 2020
The thermal structure of a protoplanetary disc is regulated by the opacity that dust grains provide. However, previous works have often considered simplified prescriptions for the dust opacity in hydrodynamical disc simulations, e.g.

GRAIN SIZE CHART OF URANIUM [PDF]

open access: yes, 1951
Abstract : The metallurgist who is familiar with uranium is aware that the metallographic study of the metal has been complicated by certain factors. Of these factors, two, namely, the anisotropic crystal structure and the presence of the so-called beta 'ghost' grains, have made accurate and rapid grain-size determinations, by comparison with existing ...

Influence of grain size on strength of polymineralic crystalline rock: New insights from DEM grain-based modeling

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 2021
Grain size effect on rock strength is a topic of great interest in geotechnical engineering. A consensus obtained from earlier laboratory tests is that rock strength generally decreases with the increase of grain size for both silicate and carbonate ...

What determines the grain size distribution in galaxies? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We construct a dust evolution model taking into account the grain size distribution, and investigate what kind of dust processes determine the grain size distribution at each stage of galaxy evolution. In addition to the dust production by type II supernovae (SNeII) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, we consider three processes in the ISM: (i ...

X-ray Halos and Large Grains in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Recent observations with dust detectors on board the interplanetary spacecraft Ulysses and Galileo have recorded a substantial flux of large interstellar grains with radii between 0.25 and 2.0 mu entering the solar system from the local interstellar ...

Grain refinement strengthening mechanism of an austenitic stainless steel: critically analyze the impacts of grain interior and grain boundary

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2022
In order to probe the superior nano/micron scale mechanical behaviors of ultra-fine grain (UFG) austenitic stainless steel as compared with coarse grain (CG) counterpart, systematic nanoindentation tests were carried out together with post-mortem EBSD ...

Validation of appropriate estimation criteria for the number of components for separating a polymodal grain-size distribution into lognormal distributions

open access: yesProgress in Earth and Planetary Science, 2023
Polymodal particle size distributions are generally analyzed by separating them into lognormal distributions, but estimating the precise number of lognormal components required remains a considerable problem.

Effect of grain size distribution and size-dependent grain heating on molecular abundances in starless and pre-stellar cores [PDF]

open access: yesA&A 640, A94 (2020), 2020
We present a new gas-grain chemical model to constrain the effect of grain size distribution on molecular abundances in starless and pre-stellar cores. We introduce grain-size dependence simultaneously for cosmic-ray (CR)-induced desorption efficiency and for grain equilibrium temperatures.

Elucidating prognostic significance of purine metabolism in colorectal cancer through integrating data from transcriptomic, immunohistochemical, and single‐cell RNA sequencing analysis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low expression of five purine metabolism‐related genes (ADSL, APRT, ADCY3, NME3, NME6) was correlated with poor survival in colorectal cancer. Immunohistochemistry analysis showed that low NME3 (early stage) and low ADSL/NME6 (late stage) levels were associated with high risk.

Understanding Specimen- and Grain-Size Effects on Nanoscale Plastic Deformation Mechanisms and Mechanical Properties of Polycrystalline Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Nanopillars [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Mechanics - A/Solids 76 (2019) 80-90, 2018
Specimen- and grain-size effects on nanoscale plastic deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of polycrystalline yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ) nanopillars are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Through uniaxial compression of YSTZ columnar nanopillars, intergranular and transgranular deformation mechanisms are ...
