Grain refinement by elemental addition has been extensively investigated within the last decades in Al or Mg alloys. In contrast, in the Cu system, the role of solute on grain size is less investigated.

Prediction of Grain Size in Cast Aluminum Alloys
Grain refinement of cast alloys, especially aluminum–silicon and magnesium-based alloys, is an effective approach to improve the strength of alloys. Grain size is the most representative parameter used to characterize grain refinement in the industry ...

Additive manufacturing of magnesium alloys by laser is difficult because the melting point of the oxide layer is much higher than the evaporation temperature of the metal underneath. Making the oxide layer thinner can solve this problem. Alloying magnesium with strontium makes the oxide layer thinner, especially at 0.5 wt%.

Stratification Instability in Granular Flows [PDF]
When a mixture of two kinds of grains differing in size and shape is poured in a vertical two-dimensional cell, the mixture spontaneously stratifies in alternating layers of small and large grains, whenever the large grains are more faceted than the small grains.

Critical grain sizes and generalized flow stress - grain size dependence
The generalized eguation that describes the yield stress dependence upon the grain size in the wide range of grain sizes has been obtained. There are two critical grain sizes that corresponds to the changes in strengthening mechanism. The equation includes Hall - Petch relation in the range of d>dcr1.

Temporal power modulation increases weld depth in high‐power laser beam welding of dissimilar round bars by nearly 20% compared to same average continuously welded welding power. The mechanism of action also applies to sheet welding and depends on the inertia of keyhole depth for the modulated laser beam power.

Zintl compound n-type Mg3(Sb,Bi)2 was recently found to exhibit excellent thermoelectric figure of merit zT (∼1.5 at around 700 K). To improve the thermoelectric performance in the whole temperature range of operation from room temperature to 720 K, we ...

Implementation of an effective time-saving two-stage methodology for microstructural characterization of cemented carbides [PDF]
Linear intercept on scanning electron microscopy micrographs is the most commonly used measurement method to determine carbide grain size and contiguity in WC–Co cemented carbides (hardmetals).

Effect of grain size and grain size distribution on slip dynamics: An experimental analysis
Abstract When faults form and slip they produce granular wear material that accommodates most of the strain. We investigate the effect of grain size and grain size distribution on slip dynamics by using sheared elliptical acrylic discs as a fault gouge proxy.
